Local bands can fight on the Unearthed website

Thanks to Justbands I noticed that JJJ has changed their Unearthed format from one that finds talent in specific locations to one that lets bands from across the nation fight to the death on an ABC website.

I’ve written on The Concatenate about why I think this is a backward step, but in keeping with JJJ’s destructive national format.

Having said that, local musicians holding out any hope at all of getting onto JJJ/Jtv had better get uploading.

yeah j’s has pretty terrible crap at the moment.

I think the new site is fantastic and have found some good new music.

I would rather sort out the good from the crap myself rather than leave it to the Js. (There is some seriously bad crap to get through)

Mick i was going to gigs sponsored by rrr and 3pbs in the 80’s.

mainly of musinc mmm fox etc would never play.

jjj does a reasonable job, but it homogenises music.

until the alp let pokies into victoria, live music was on at so many pubs you could go to 6 different gigs in 6 different pubs in one week in fitzroy/brunswick/collingwood area alone.

i hope the new format works, but it restores isolation to regional musicians who benefited from the roadshow aspect of unearthed.

Except you’ve bought JJJ’s big lie of describing the national as the “local”.

You’re forgetting that the original Unearthed, whilst it was damn successful was very expensive to run. I am not all together happy with the new format either, but we’ve had years without it existing at all, so at least it comes back in some way.

I think that JJJ should always be commended for encouraging local music. They have done more for local music than any other stream of media in the past and they will continue to do so.

They are basically taking advantage of the popularity of websites such as myspace, mp3.com, purevolume.com…. which revolves around a peer to peer style rating system. The problem with this is that everyone highly rates everyone else’s music in the hope that they recieve the same treatment. It becomes a popularity contest as opposed to a music contest, and one thing I cannot stand is people being nice to other people for the sake of being liked.

It also takes the whole event feeling out of it as well and it does cheapen the whole affair with no clear cut winners.

The advantage of this setup is that more local music is more accessable to the broader population, and enhances the ability of bands to network, collaborate and almost manage themselves.

needless to say it is the future of music, due to the lack of overheads and the accesability of it – in essence it means any band is on the interweb equivalent to radio. What effect it has on the music industry will certainly be interesting, I think it will result in the fall of the big labels as we know them. But I am sure some bright person will figure out a way of controlling the market.
