With the carnage in Mumbai gripping the imagination of the world’s media there’s a Canberra connection with which to justify wall to wall reportage.

News reports that two of the victims have just completed their degrees at ANU.

For those who know them, David Coker and Katie Anstee were caught in the crossfire but it looks like they’ll be OK.

It’s funny how you always think these things happen to “other people,” but this time round, actually knowing Mr. Coker to more than just a “hi” while passing in a hallway has made it a slightly more real event to me.

i think they’re both quite lucky to have only sustained relatively minor injuries. And my understanding is that they’re safe now and recovering.

Good news and excellent service by the ANU.

Got this in my inbox.

Dear Students

You may have heard that two ANU students have been identified as amongst those injured in the Mumbai attacks.

The best information that I can give you is that the two – David Coker and Katie Anstee – were in Mumbai privately to celebrate their imminent graduation from the ANU. According to reports, David has grazes to his legs and Kate has a bullet wound to her thigh; there is apparently no major arterial damage and she is expected to make a full recovery – although her wound needed stabilizing surgery. They are expected to return home within the next few days.

We have been in contact with their parents and we offer them, and our two students, whatever support we can.

Best wishes,

“Terror Attacks ‘India’s 9/11′” – Yahoo7

Good grief. Not quite! Some more classic blown out and misleading headlining by Yahoo7!

I’m really glad that they’re OK, can get good medical treatment and, if they want, to get home soon.

In another thread we have people criticising journo’s for lazyness. I this case I think the journo in this case showed some enterprise to get in touch with friends of the victims via facebook. If you don’t want to talk to him, simply ignore his message.

Whats wrong with that ?

Yeah, they’re well enough, blessings be. But check out this piece of journalistic trawling I received in my facebook inbox.

Brisbane Times doesn’t even have a print run.

Hi there,

My name is Shannon Molloy and I am a journalist with Brisbane Times. I’m following the story about David Coker and Katie Anstee, who were injured in the Mumbai terrorist attacks. Sorry to bother you during what I’m sure is a difficult time.

As one of Katie’s friends, would you be willing to chat to me about your reaction to the news and how you’re coping?

Let me know if you’re willing and I can give you a call.

Kind Regards,

Shannon Molloy
