Local News, Anna Napoli, Pete and Biggzy

When watching some shows on the new channels I’ve come across Anna Napoli reading the news. What a mixed bag she is presenting. A few weeks ago she referred to Woden as wooden, yeah, as in wooden furniture. Then she sprouts off place names like they were local suburbs when I’ve never heard of them. Occasionally I hear about ‘local’ news from Orange, Wollongong, Newcastle and other places I can’t even find on a map. It is also obvious that she’s reading a tele prompter as her eyes flicker left and right. Finally, the same recording pops up about three times a night, so when there is breaking stories like the NZ earthquakes and Japanese Tsunami she just sits there chatting about the opening of a new RSL club in Dubbo or other mundane stuff.

It kind of defeats the purpose if the local news isn’t local, and the reader can’t even pretend it is by getting the pronunciation of the suburbs right.

Why is it that local media have to hype things up? Why call it local news if really it is regional news? And why do local radio stations have to make out like every day is excitement plus? I was listening to Pete and Biggzy this morning and Pete was saying that something would be the biggest announcement we’d ever hear on the radio station. Bigger than what? Bigger than 9/11? Bigger than the Japan Tsunami? Bigger than Princess Di dieing? Bigger than some bus breaking down on Northbourne avenue holding up traffic?

Face it people. We are at the ass end of the universe. We know we’re not big potatoes compared to Melbourne, Brisbane, Sydney or even Adelaide and Perth. You don’t have to hype up the media. We can cope with being called a regional centre. Just try pronounce the local names right and stop giving us news from Dubbo or Bogan Gate and calling it local.

So it’s not just me? I cannot watch the local news updates without cringing when that Anna Napoli woman comes on. I’m sorry but she’s just all wrong for the job. Her physical appearance, her clothes and her poor ability to read news. I’m not sure if it’s the creepy, hypnotic, darting eyes or the monotone, nasally reading of the headlines that turns me off. Good on her for trying, but the poor girl is just plain awful. And she isn’t the first. Who gives these people the job of reading the news updates? And who on earth decides what they should wear?!! One word to sum it all up….BLAND!!

My understanding is that most of the different regional news bulletins are done by one person ie she (usually) sits in a studio and does the Wollongong local bulletin, then the Canberra one then the SW tablelands (or whatever). They also do multiple weather reports for all the regions. So basically its a full time job sitting there reading news from the teleprompter all day. Probably little ability to read through things and pick up difficult names and check them out.

Of course the person writing the news could use phonetics to assist.

Here’s a scary thought for those judging me for liking these HOT newsreaders — I actually MET Christine Kinninmoth and she has actually read my works in detail, and she admired them (and she said and I quote “I couldn’t keep my nose out….”), so there!!

Do you dance around your apartment wearing her skin?

Where do you get this s***?

Somebody grew up with Silence of the Lambs as a bedtime story?

Just goes to show that — contrary to what a lot of people on RiotACT seem to believe — Moths is not afraid of me.

It puts the lotion on its skin.

Eleven does a pretty good run in syndicated comedies.

Interesting… this must be a TV channel that interrupts viewing with lots of annoying commercials. No wonder I can’t recall seeing these people as those channels, for the moron viewers in society, have been consigned to the skip function on my TV.

I’m a little bit in love with Anna Napoli.

I completely agree with JB on the:

“I know in my household Anna Napoli’s become a bit of a star in the “what on earth is she wearing?” stakes.”

Anna Napoli was unusually upbeat last night. Maybe she be trolling?

Bring back Robbo and Christine Keninmonth and Mike Larkin

Robbo is doing national ads, I think, Kininmonth is inventing things, and yes, bring back Mike Larkan and his whistly nose!

I rather like that earnest young couple they have on one of the commercial stations, no idea which, they’re very young and eager, and the guy is the funniest looking chap you’ll ever see, giant toothy grin from ear to ear, but you want them to do well.

The people who read out those dodgy traffic reports on the radio are clearly from elsewhere. They insist on referring to Parkes Way as The ParkesWay and it’s really annoying.

Watching with non-locals trying to pronounce local names is always amusing.
But the number of times she pronounces Gungahlin with a short a, or Wanniassa as Wanaisa really starts to grind…
I look forward to the day she needs to cover a story such as Gungahlin Ngarigo man arrested in Ngunnawal for crimes commited earlier this week in Weetangera, who is subsequently taken to Belconnen police station.

Watch it buddy, you’ve already scared off one newsreader

Oh, please. Not another stalking from the creepy speeder.

Anna Napoli is hilarious. If she was delivering a comedy sketch you’d describe it as dead-pan.

And the other chick (Amy?) must do her own makeup without the aid of a mirror.

Good to see you’re continuing to take a healthy interest in local media.

Channel Ten and news is an oxymoron.

People actually watch the local news? Wow. I gave up years ago. There’s never anything of interest or actual importance that I couldn’t find out about faster via the internet.

Also, WIN couldn’t light a friggin news set if their lives depended on it, and their camera crews need to learn to use the damn zebra stripes in the viewfinder.

Rawhide Kid Part310:28 am 07 Jul 11

I think they call it regional / local news to keep within their Broadcast license. It has something to do with the local content agreements.
That way they (Southern Cross Media) don’t have to spend all that money producing a half hour local news presentation like WIN does so well.

I know in my household Anna Napoli’s become a bit of a star in the “what on earth is she wearing?” stakes.

Fair enough JB, but either way the ACT isn’t actually being serviced by SC Media in its reporting of news, especially by Ms Napoli. Bring back Robbo and Christine Keninmonth and Mike Larkin

The ‘service’ comes out of Southern Cross media out of Wollongong and thus it caters to a regional gambit. Not making excuses for it, it’s awful and she’s the most inane news reader ever. But that’s what happens with corss media ownership and cost cuttig. We might be the capital but we get treated like the back of beyond when it comes to news.

Pretty sure Southern Cross media are coming out of Canberra, but servicing vast regional areas.
