Local people have been approached in a political ad about the growth of the Public Service in Canberra.

They seen to agree that there has been significant growth, and that the Kevin Rudds promise to unleash “razor gangs” is all talk!

See anyone you know in this?

The PS is not exactly homogenous either.

There are some pockets of slackness, but there are areas where everyone works really hard and never take lunch. My experience has been that the smaller the agency the harder you work, but that hasn’t always been true. Some areas in the bigger depts are really busy too.

There is the occasional time-server who does the bare minimum, but they are not the majority.

Fairly dense all right.

What, exactly, do people ‘outside Canberra’ know about the public service?

All I know is that I’ve worked nearly as many 12-14 hour days as a public servant as I have in the private sector.

“Step outside Canberra and ask people what they think of the Public Service. I’m not gonna say anything else. It’s quite plain to see. Debate it in your own mind. My mind is quite solid on the issue.”

Yes Heavs, I’m pretty sure its the same person. Works well with ABC’s political slant don’t you think?

chris lilley is flaunting caged avians now??? shame on him!

Just slightly OT. Does anyone else think that the bird in the CPSU ad either is, or bears an uncanny resemblance to, the teacher from Summer Height High?

your mind seems quite solid indeed, barney – solid as a stone, and as dense…

what, exactly, is ‘plain to see’, and if it is so plain, please do explain…

hingo_VRCalaisV612:24 pm 11 Oct 07

Wow good argument you put up there Barney. Some mindless (possibly redneck) idiots gave their opinion on something they probably know very little about and now you also hate the Public Service? How old are you? 14? Obviously not old enough to come up with your own judgements based on substantial information.

Who the heck are the LDP? hahaha.

Step outside Canberra and ask people what they think of the Public Service. I’m not gonna say anything else. It’s quite plain to see. Debate it in your own mind. My mind is quite solid on the issue.

i rekkun ze means that after about december we will have had an election, the labor party will be in and cull the amorphous mass that is the current federal p.s. no???????????????????????

and barney, well said. o, hang on, people like you vote, don’t they? shucks. we’d be greatly obliged for some evidence of your assertions – i know quite a few p.s.’s and none of them are morons, nor carved from stone, nor have such shallow life ambitions – au contraire…

what, pray tell, are your own rich tapestry of a life’s ambitions, ol’ chum, eh? do tell, we’re all ears…

“We at least centrelink workers will be in a growth industry after about December”

We, I don’t quite understand what you mean???????????????????????????????????????

There is a wrong side???????????????????????????? We at least centrelink workers will be in a growth industry after about December

I have a feeling Barney’s only encounters with public servants have been from the wrong side of the Centrelink counter.

Hahaha ownage!!

From http://www.dictionary.com

Main Entry: agreeance
Part of Speech: n
Definition: the act of agreeing
Example: Usage of the site constitutes agreeance with these terms.

Thumper, there is no such word as “agreeance”. I wish everyone would stop using it.

Barney obviously lost his job in the public service and is bbitter and twisted.

hingo_VRCalaisV61:00 pm 10 Oct 07

Nice moronic generalisation there Barney. How about I suggest you are a muslim and therefore you should be locked up and the key thrown away. Thats how rediculous your comment sounds, and I don’t even work in the PS.

The public service is full of pathetic morons carved out of stone. Their life goal is to stay in the one job for 50 years, drinking coffee, having 50 meetings a day to make themselves FEEL IMPORTANT whilst paying off their debt and being an EXTREMELY BORING bunch of bitterly twisted t0ssers. If you feel you are not enjoying the PS, I strongly recommend leaving before you become what you never were.

That’s all I can say. Sorry if I offended anybody. Or am I ?

PS: The video was lame. I’d be happy to see the public service killed off – just like the majority of hopelessly lame people that work in it.

more than the ‘stated aim’ of the ps – the first of the values for the ps enshrined in the act is to be apolitical…

but ps’s are still entitled to hold and express a personal opinion on all manner of topics – it is how these opinions might affect their actual workplace performance that could result in problems.

personally, i have a problem with public servants coming up with ways to promote the minister, or the party. election period or no.

We only worry about being apolitical during the election period i mean.

Yes but the stated aim of the public service used to be to be apolitical. In PR areas work that was seen as promoting the minister and not the department was flicked back to the minister’s office for their staff to do. Now we sit around brainstorming ways to promote the miniters. Times have changed a lot.

Now we only seem to worry about that during the election period.

the public service is far from apolitical and it is impossible for it to be purely apolitical.

hingo_VRCalaisV68:51 am 10 Oct 07

Andy,

Some of the Workplace Authority ads feature DEWR employees and some feature actors. All the ads are filmed in the DEWR offices in Braddon and out at the airport.

They called Rudd Dr Death as he de-nationaled the PS in qld. Doesn’t matter Canberra will always vote labor – the real game is queanbeyan. Just remember fellow voters you are not worth much unless you are in a marinal seat so the best thing the ACT community can do is make the ACT more marginal – just look how much Tassie can extort

Local public servants should be more worried about the deal that the CPSU has stitched-up with Labor – a single public service wide ‘collective agreement’.

Promising to cut the PS and running for a seat in the ACT – good luck!

What an absolutely shithouse video. They think this is going to get them votes?

and the ad where the dude goes on about the fairness test, and he’s uing the calculator, also doesn’t work for the WPA.
So, at least we know the Govt isn’t using real public servants.. even if they are lying in the ads..

Dmd: Correct, it is not me but the writer of the article who is quoting it as if it means something. I was merely trying to point out the fallacy of concluding something (other than about the views of those who made the ad) from the apparent consensus of views.

ok, so, the ad where the dude is talkin about how his younger broher is on an awa and wants to move out, and his mum wants him to move out too.. that girl that says “bla bla, here at the work place authority…” is not from the WPA.
Nor are any of the other people in that ad.

I’m still confused by all of those apolitical adverts. IMHO they are cast by some cunning pro-Labour bloke because they are all a bunch of tosspots on film.

Does nothing for the ad campaign when the actors are lamer than who framed roger rabbit.

The public service is supposed to be politically neutral, so public servants shouldn’t appear in political advertising, be it Barbara Bennett in the WorkChoices ads (which were a blatant mouthpiece for the Howard government no matter how much anyone tries to dress them up as “information campaigns”) or rank and file pubes in youtube campaigns.

Deadmandrinking6:09 pm 09 Oct 07

Well, it’s a pretty ineffective ad if they don’t, caf.

Bear in mind that there’s no suprise that “they all seem to agree”, as the producers of the ad have certainly chosen the responses that illustrate their particular political view.

I keep missing the last names on all the Workplace Authority ads.. I’d be interested to see if they do in fact work for the WOrkplace Ombudsman

Ralph: They’re people on the street giving their personal opinion – they’re quite obviously not speaking for their department (whatever it might be) or in their role as public servants, and more than I would be if someone asked me the same question, then asked broadly what my job was – suggesting they should be sacked is just outright ridiculous.

And remember MrMagoo, it’s not advertising, it’s an information campaign – that’s a totally different thing!

Yeah i actually posted here about this, wondering how Ms Bennett could do it if she was a public servant, same as the woman from the workplace info line. I didn’t think public servants could be used in advertising for the government or political parties.

Deadmandrinking4:58 pm 09 Oct 07

Ralph, they’re still allowed to express their opinions when interviewed, I’m sure.

And it’s a big difference compared with what Ms Barbara Bennett was doing.

Engaging in political activity, that’s if they are not paid actors pretending to be public servants.

Otherwise they should be sacked.
