Can anyone tell me if there are any inherent problems with using the Long Stay parking at Canberra Airport? Is it safe leaving your car there overnight etc? Any other tips from those who have used the service in the past?

More info and prices already online.

TIA

I found that undercover parking at Canberra Airport can be quite expensive. I recently parked there and was charged $90.00 for less than 36 hours.

A mate has witnessed them moving a car, apparently they use a big fork lift type thingy with heavy duty straps which they loop under the car to lift it. My car had greasy hand prints on each corner where they must have manoeuvred it.

I’ve parked there for up to a week. No complaints about security or value, although you may end up parking right near the Business Park if you get there at a bad time of the week.

That’s the long stay car park? I walk through it every so often and there’s a 4WD that habitually parks across two spaces that favours that end.

I reckon they used a winch and a tow-truck.

SG: “How could they move your car if you’re not there to unlock it for them?”

I thought the same thing and was quite p!ssed off. The security bloke I went to to question where my car was and who helped me find it had no answer and was not particularly interested except to waive my parking fee.
I declined as the problem is that because the system registered my credit card on entry, it needs to register and charge my card on the way out.
If I had exited without payment, the system would’ve thought I was still in the carpark and when next I tried to enter the carpark again it would not accept my card.
This has happened to me before when I lost my credit card on my trip away.

Have a friend drop you = no $ in Terry Snow’s pocket and no crazy taxi fare 🙂

I’m sure he’d get a lot more takers!

: )

If only Greg would expand his free accommodation service to a free transport arm eh?

Cab Saving from Kambah = $50
24 hour stay in car park = $17
Feeling when you walk past the extensive cab queue = PRICELESS

You can’t pay on the way out, that bloke who parked at the exit sounds like a prize knob. You need to insert your credit card in the machine on the way in and then on the way out and your card is debited and the machine issues a receipt. I use it regularly as our company has a policy that any stays over 3hrs you must use it.

We’ve used it plenty of times with no problem. Do give yourself heaps of time because if its busy it can take ages to find a park and it may be a fair walk from the terminal.

We also think its better than waiting for a cab. Not cheaper ‘tho on some occasions.

the only problem i’ve experienced there was last time on returning to canberra and going to leave, the exit gate machine wasn’t accepting people’s credit card for some reason (i didn’t even realise you could pay at the exit rather than the machine) and the dickhead who had left it til the exit to pay turned off his car and got out, leaving it there and blocking the exit, while he went off to sort it out – thereby blocking the exit for others (it would have been EASY to reverse out to leave it clear) – you selfish tool.

we use the long stay even if it costs say $10 more than return cab fares – because any opportunity to avoid use of cabs and cab drivers is a bonus if you ask me.

We’ve also used it several times as they offer a special deal for the weekend – in Friday arvo (after 3pm) and out anytime Sunday – $30

Haven’t had any security issues and have managed to find a park each time when arriving at approx 5pm.

Agree with p1 – cheaper and more reliable than a taxi.

Used it a few times for longer stays without any dramas. Compares pricewise with 2 taxi trips from the outer suburbs. Never had any security issues(or any issues finding a space, but I also tend to use the out of hours flights).

Your biggest problem will be finding the exit 🙂 No worries with security though, used several times in 07 and 08 and had no problems.

I used it yesterday (and many times before). No problems, but you do need to get there early to find a spot.

Oh, I’ll be getting there early, I have a 0635 departure this Friday, haha.

Thank you for the replies.

Haven’t used it since the last round of construction started, but at the time it was certainly cheaper and easier then a taxi.

I use it regularly for periods of time ranging from 6 hrs to 6 days. Never had safety issues. As mentioned above, it does get quite full at times and the construction work hasn’t made it any better.

We went to South Australia a couple of months ago and left the car there for nearly a week ($96). The biggest problem was finding a spot. It was quite safe and very full but check out how to pay before you use it as the online instructions might not be what happens in reality no doubt due to the work going on there.

I use it all the time when I’m travelling for three days or less. I’ve never had a problem although I have heard of cars being broken into there. No different from any carpark I guess, in fact it probably has a better police presence than most.

It’s cheaper and far more reliable than getting a taxi.
