Looking for a good accountant in Canberra

Can anyone recommend a good accountant?

My old accountant with whom I had a good rapport has left the firm I use, a fact I discovered only when I went in to drop off my tax.

Now I’m feeling slightly gouged as the firm has jacked up its fees to twice what they were a year before with no warning.

I expect price rises, my bill would go up around 10% each year, but not 100% price rises.

Maybe my old accountant did me some favours, I don’t know, but I’m pretty sure I wasn’t receiving a 50% discount.

It’s not like I present them with a ‘shoebox’ of receipts.

Anyway, if anyone can recommend a competent and personable accountant, or small firm, it would be greatly appreciated.

Small office in Belconnen where you won’t get charged an arm and a leg.
He lodges your return on the spot.

I’d like to second that emotion. Unless you’re the sort of person who thought a Range Rover was an intelligent way to spend your money, in which case Duesbury’s right up your alley.

Being a small player it was tough to get an accountant with good customer service , but switched to these guys and have been smooth sailing http://www.globalaccountingservices.com.au/

I would recommend my accountant except, like most of the good cheap ones, they are are not taking any more customers.

A second recommedation for Jane Hardill Accounting, or there is also William Mckell & Co in North Lyenham as well.

Had a bit to do with both these firms through work and both seem very professional and know what’s going on in the exciting world of accountancy – I’m not sure on prices however as have never had my tax done through them (I do my tax myself as it is always very simple!).

Just as long as you dont go to an accountant who is a member of the NIA…

Anyone can be an accountant…

Can’t agree with that comment. Took me 6 years part time to get an Accountancy Certificate.

Luke Glanville from Achilleus Accounting. I think they just moved office and are in Leichardt St Kingston now?

Good advice and all, but the cost of getting the return done is an issue as well. I have a few investment properties, and have to balance the cost of getting a tax return done(and not having a headache as well) with the huge chunk of tax return taken out from paying that much for a couple of hours work for a trained professional.

$800 last year for something she admitted less then two hours. I wish I got paid that much… 🙂

I will recommend ITP (Income Tax Professionals) in Belconnen. They are Tax marvels! I thought that I would only get back $1500 and they got me $4500. And they are so straight down the line and up front with you. In fact I enjoyed my Tax experience so much I offered to buy them a bottle of champagne.

I used them last year for the first time at the recommendation of a family member. They seemed a bit disappointed that my taxes were so simple but still got me a good refund. However, I heard through said family member, that the accountant who did our taxes last year from belconnen has now passed away, so we may be looking elsewhere this year too depending on what their fees look like now.

Ah! The old only to certainties in life theory proven!

Thanks all for the input.

Anyone can be an accountant… thats why i use a chartered accountant.

Whoops – Hussey & Hussey are no longer in Civic – they have now moved to Dickson.

I can highly recommend Pamela Hussey at Hussey & Hussey on London Circuit in the City. Very efficient, reasonably priced and is an actual accountant (not just a tax gent).

Your very own self (as an accountant)?

No no, I’m not trying to be a smart-arse. Let me explain.

If you’re only doing work-related expenses, investment properties, and shares, you might as well learn it and do it yourself. It’s a bit of a learning curve but once you’ve commanded it, it’d give you better control over your affairs. Furthermore, you might actually get back more in tax return?

In my case, being an investment property owner, it took me four nights to get it done…
Four nights of headaches and bitching and screeching…

What was that accountant’s name again???

Ha! So do I use Matt, nice chap, highly recommended,.

I use John Taubenschlag, of Taubenschlag & Associates. He has always done a good job for me. He’s based at the Woden shops, which isn’t actually all that convenient for me, but hey, I only go there once a year. Ph 02 6232 5777.

When it comes to accounting, remember the simple rule: the dodgier the better.
