Looking for a hypnotherapist

I’ve been having some difficulty losing weight and though I’d give hypnosis a try for a bit of assistance.

Can anyone recommend a hypnotherapist in Canberra? And does anyone know the ballpark fee for this kind of appointment?

Thanks.

I know this is very much after the fact since the original question was asked in 2009 but
I would like to throw in my 2 cents worth since I am a suitably qualified hypnotherapist and counsellor. I am aware that many people still read this post.

I agree that the solution for weight loss should be holistic one that includes healthy diet and exercise since the basic principle of weight loss never changes….you should burn more energy that you consume. Where Hypnotherapy helps, is with the psychological aspect.

We all want to achieve something, but most times we just do not have the necessary willpower to persist to achieve our goals, take New Year’s Resolutions for example….how many of them last? The technical term for that is called Homeostasis – the inert tendency to resist change.

In short….Hypnosis will not make you lose weight, it will help you get the correct mindset.

Yeah, I’ve been dicked around by MHW in the ACT too, the guy I saw actually got disbarred or however you call it for a doctor.

Sounds like the infamous mad Indian who caused at least five suicides and was promoted to a senior position at MHW before someone here on RiotACT named and shamed him. Good to hear this bastard was finally drummed out and thanks to JB for having the courage to publish that post and help stop a lot more misery and suicides.

Yeah, I’ve been dicked around by MHW in the ACT too, the guy I saw actually got disbarred or however you call it for a doctor. But that’s the advice I always, find a professional, the only problem is the only decent ones are few and far between, and all seem to be booked to high-heaven and charge through the nose to boot

A qualified mental health worker would be my suggestion. Failing that, hypnotherapy might have some kind of helpful effect but it’ll be mostly all in your head (pardon the pun). If that’s good enough for you then it might be worth giving it a shot, but I’d still suggest a psychologist of psychiatrist first.

You would think that, hey, but in actual fact the ‘qualified’ workers did pretty much nothing, except identify that there was a problem (oh really, punching holes in the wall during your sleep is a problem? Thanks for taking $200 to verify that for me). The ‘qualified’ people reckon the only solution is regular use of sedatives. As much as theyre professionals and all, were looking for options other than being doped up for life, hence the thoughts for looking for a hypnotherapist, or someone who might actually be able to make a difference, other than verifying the problem as explained, and writing out prescriptions.

Im interested in the above question about locating hypnotists, but for a friends night tremors. Presumably all hypnotherapists are capable of treating a lot of ailments other than just quitting smoking and losing weight, but can also help with subconscious issues and help from issues of domestic violence.

Im sure there are plenty of scammers as shown here, but can anyone actually make a serious suggestion?

I agree.. if your really serious don’t do hypnosis.. try acupuncture

*sigh*

Acupuncture can help with cravings… Its more for people who have food addictions, those who cant bring themselves to give up their chocolate bar or 2L of coke every day… etc etc etc

No the point I think he was trying to make is that acupuncture and hypnotherapy are both equally dubious as far as evidence of efficacy goes, that’s what the sighing is all about, I’m assuming.

you are getting sleepy, your eyes are getting heavy. let them close. breathe. focus on your breath. eat your breath. nothing else. your weight is dropping. when you awake, you’ll be lighter.

that’ll be 150 dollars thanks.

i agree – forget hypotherapy –

maybe look into walking more and yoga – no joke – from my experience – the more you understand and listen to your body you will live differently and make better choices without even realising – it will take a bit of time but you will learn to like and enjoy your body because you will feel better and more positive … and not fight against your body

Instead of paying a charlatan, spend the money on small quantities of truly high-end food like organic turkey, artisan bread, expensive fruit etc (rich, satisfying foods, so you don’t miss fatty and sugary foods), count your calories, and don’t exercise to the extent that you work up an appetite. If you need support, sign up to an online forum like obesitydiscussion. Keep a rigorous diary, weigh your food, do the calculations. Eat no less than 1200 calories a day.

You will lose min. 50g a day.

I’m the kind of subject hypnotherapists have nightmares about, ’nuff said.

I don’t wish to trivialise weight loss nor tell anyone how to suck eggs, and I don’t claim to have all the answers; I’m just relating my experience here.

I lost 15kg earlier this year in 3 months by finding an exercise that I enjoyed or that had a purpose (ie; fun!) other than pure exercise. The idea of the gym might seem daunting, but it achieves the same thing via the group mentality it fosters – everyone has a competitive streak! So I can essentially ‘hypnotise’ myself by misdirection! (Wikipedia: “Hypnosis is a mental state… or set of attitudes…”)

Sure, I’ll take your money.

Forget the gimmicks – weight loss is easy.

Eat lots of fruit and vegetables, drink heaps of water and walk lots.

Learn to estimate kilojoules and use an online calculator to work out your daily energy consumption. 85% of this number is your target intake for eating and drinking.

This method should have you losing between a half a kilo and a kilo a week, which is plenty fast enough. Once it becomes habit, you’ll be sweet.

I agree.. if your really serious don’t do hypnosis..

Get a personal trainer, or go to somewhere like Flames Fitness, join a gym with a mate.

Have a chat to a nutritionist about your diet, try acupuncture etc etc.

I tried this in sydney – and it worked for me. The guy is named Alfred Bellanti (sp??). He sells his CDs if you email him – they are very good.

If you’re serious about losing weight and keeping it off, don’t do hypnosis.

Get holistic personal training. Strive Inspirational Training in Braddon (Tanya Gendle).

I lost eight kgs in six weeks and I was full of energy and was still losing weight while having a fairly hectic lifestyle and quite a few sherbets most nights.
