Looking for a new Job/Career and over it AKA crowd sourcing career advice

Howdy Riot-actors,

I was hoping to pick your brain, get some advice, some opinions and God willing some flames.

I am currently (buzz words turned on) seeking a new challenge and I am not having a good time at it, I have updated the resume and sent it out into the wild hoping that it would return with a wondrous bounty, but sadly pickings be slim.

If you could fine a moment just to pen down some musings regarding Job agencies to contact, organisations to work for or just some hints on finding and landing a new job I would be most grateful. I am hoping to land something in the ICT field in Canberra area or surrounds and I have spectacular customer service.

I suppose I could just apply to every APS job or role that appears on Seek that is in my pay range but I am not looking for a pay day, or a job to last me through winter I think it is time that a grew up a got a career.

So hit me with your comments.

here comes another option, apart from uploading your cv at different cites, make a layout of important companies that you know or any of your friend refer, and personally go and pay a visit to those places, drop your CV over there, explore the whole company, understand their work and show your interest by making references yourself on the spot, you personal interaction will make your interest look stronger!

There is a career expo on on Wednesday 21 March. 10am to 3pm
Hedley Beare Centre for teaching and learning. 51 Fremantle drive stirling.
It’s mainly targeted for Indigenous Job seekers but on the plus side there will be information about all the industries and extra free stuff

Agencies are hesitant to increase their ASL given the cuts from the fed and local council – so are very reluctant to engage people outside their own staffing pool.

Have you thought about talking to a career adviser? CDAA has a list by locality: http://www.cdaa.org.au/

I think I was a little disheartened by the ACT Gov and APS by applying for jobs that are just going to market because they have someone acting in it already to make permanent.

Hi there,

I get the distinct impression that the Canberra job market is non existent atm. Despite I think something like 3.5% unemployment, I can’t find *any* job – I’m registered with lots of agencies and scour ads and gazette. I never hear back from employers either. If you hear of anything that actually seems promising, please share the news 🙂

Fair enough, but if you aspire to a career in the APS, you really need to get a job, any job, then move sideways and/or upwards quickly once you’ve made an impression and some contacts. Resign yourself to up to six months of biding your time in “just a job.” If you’re spectacular at *anything*, trust me, you’ll be noticed.

See the link below for current local government ICT positions advertised. The most common mistake people make when applying for government positions is not putting enough effort or any into the selection criteria. It may take you a couple of nights however you’ll find once you answer a few questions well you’re able to reuse those answers for multiple applications.
