Whether you’re a small business owner, a marketing executive for a big brand or a salesperson converting prospective buyers into loyal customers, you can’t overestimate the importance of a professional and well-designed website.

A purpose-built website is more than a nice piece of design. It should be intuitive and easy-to-use. It should also work equally well on mobile devices, tablets and PCs.

Designing a website that’s functional and attractive isn’t as easy as you might expect. For a successful website project, you’ll need to hire a professional digital company. This can help you sort through the complexities involved. It can also help you streamline your project.

In this article, we’ll outline the qualities to consider when choosing a website designer, and share where to find the best in Canberra.

What makes a great website designer?

There are plenty of resources for building your own website. A professional web designer, however, understands the technical, visual and functional aspects of web design and structure. They are experts at developing unique site. This is a site that reflects your brand and supports your business to grow.

Choosing the right website designer can help fast-track your project. It can also take the stress out of dealing with a technical environment.

  • Technical know-how. You’ll want a website designer who uses a platform that suits your needs, whether that’s WordPress, Drupal or another site-building platform. Seek advice from your website designer on different platforms. Make sure they have experience with the one you choose.
  • Eye for design. A huge part of web design is, well, the design. Your finished website should be as attractive as it’s straightforward to use. Check out website designers’ own websites. Also explore their portfolios. You can even ask the designers to talk you through projects they’ve completed.
  • Briefing and communications. Check your chosen web designer pays attention to your brief. Ask for an in-depth conversation at the start of your project. Cover your needs, desires, target market, culture, style and competitive edge. Make sure your web designer is a great communicator. This will help you understand what you’re getting. It can also minimise costly revisions.
  • Search engine optimisation (SEO) knowledge. Search engines are complex beasts. You’ll want a website designer who understands all that is involved. This way, existing and new clients can find you. Make sure your designer clearly communicates what SEO is. Ask how you can take advantage of it.
  • Value-for-money. It’s no secret that higher quality, more complex sites can be more expensive. Whatever your budget, you’ll want to shop around for quotes. This will make sure you pay a fair price and get value-for-money.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I choose a website designer?

You’ll want a website designer with an excellent portfolio, proven experience and great communications skills. You’ll also want one who wants to learn about your business and your brand. Choose a company that will design and build your website to deadline and budget. And make sure you choose a designer with a personality you can work well with.

How much does it cost to have a website designed?

The costs involved are influenced by many factors. This includes the type of website you need, its size, complexity and functionality. If you run a small business, you might not need a highly complex website, which means you might not need to pay as much as, say, a large corporation. Make sure you ask for detailed and itemised written quotes. Do so before you sign any agreement. Also ask how you’ll be billed.

Can’t I just build a ‘do-it-yourself’ website?

You can build your own website, and there are plenty of platforms for doing so. The question is: “How well do they work for your business?” Developing effective websites that are intuitive and drive business to you are complex. There’s a lot involved.

Who owns the website after it’s built?

This is a good question. It’s a good idea to discuss this in advance with the website designer so it’s clear before you begin.

How do I keep my website up-to-date?

This is something you should discuss early with your website designer. You might want to manage your own website. Or you might want ongoing external help. With external help, you’ll want to work out how much this will cost. Again, ask for detailed and itemised written quotes.

I decided to get a website for my painting business and within one week it has already paid itself off with new clients. I love my new website! Check it out – https://www.lcbpaintinggroup.com.au/
The service I received from Project Simple the website company was amazing. I know nothing about technology and they made everything so simple. Look no further than https://www.projectsimple.com.au/. I’m going to leave a positive review for these guys everywhere

You need to be a little bit more honest here mate. People are not stupid! I’ve worked as a digital marketer for over 12 years and no website ranks high organically in just a week and starts receiving enquiries.

I’ve looked up your website URL and your home page is the only page that is currently indexing on Google (Its not ranking for any keywords) and you can see the results yourself when you type this on Google search/address bar ‘site:lcbpaintinggroup.com.au’.

I’ve also noticed that you are running Google Adwords campaign (PPC – Pay Per Click) which is most likely how you had some enquiries but that’s something every individual/business can do and its not rocket science especially if you have the money to bid high.

People here are after genuine feedback, and results including relationships between client and businesses. I would recommend working with the business for at least 6 – 12 months before jumping on to conclusions and making such recommendations.

(I’m really not sure if this review was actually written by the business owner because I’ve never seen someone leave a review saying ‘I’m going to leave a positive review for these guys everywhere’.)

LCB Painting10:48 am 02 Dec 22

Ok, that’s an interesting reply! Did I get a quote from you guys? Feel free to call me on the number on my website so I can confirm my honest review at any time. And yes I do have a google ad?? Since posting my review I’ve made my money back at least 4 times now. I should have got a website a long time ago. The web agency have been great to work with.

I used Project Simple to help me build a website for my trade business. James was amazing to deal with, he explained what was going on every step of the way. Hi Bella,

I run a small business here in Canberra and also down the coast , We are air con installers for residential and commercial properties.

In the past we had tried different web design company ranging from local to even who are TV celebrities but none really providing us steady growth, It was usually a spike of enquiry and would burn out.

We were recommended to by a friend to http://www.technowand.com.au and have not looked back. They really made a difference to our business. Things have been going well for us and I am sure the website plays an important role.

Good mob and very easy to deal with.

All the best.

It’s 2017 and I’ve noticed some of these businesses are no longer around, but we are. I love to build websites and develop custom automation solutions for small businesses, check us out.

Definitely would recommend Technowand – https://technowand.com.au/

I was also once searching for a company to complete a web site for my sister’s cafe, but I was not lucky enough to get exactly what we wanted. So I decided to make a web site by myself, and I was searching for a site developer to help us here: http://www.webbuildersguide.com/website-builder-categories/best-website-builders-for-cafe-and-restaurants/
After that, we managed to come up with something we really wanted, by our own and with no extra expenses.

Many thanks all!

A small studio that has the ability and experience you’re looking for.

I would second these guys – Kynan is a very talented designer.

To the OP – just remember, you get what you pay for. If you want your website full of bugs and not working on different browsers. Sure, go the cheaper option. If you want something that is well thought out, is easily able to be updated by you and not just a template site, then you will need to pay a bit more.

Hi Bella,

I’m a copywriter and work with a local web designer to offer packages that are highly affordable for small business. Check out the Launch package – http://www.rachelziv.com.au/website-design.html – which is specifically designed for local service businesses requiring an online brochure-style website for under $500.

Hi Bella. I had my site designed about 6 months ago. ED were very good. Locally based. But it does really depend on what you need? The other company I have used for another web based project was Pugh Morgan. They also did a great job. They are based in Melbourne but I didn’t find that was an issue.

Subz Design is an I.T business which specialises in Mobile Application Development, Software Development, Databases, Graphic Design, and Web Design and Development. I have found apps and websites developed for my business by Web Network Pty Ltd to be of superior quality and value for money.

They can be contacted:
http://www.web-network.com.au/development/Website-Wordpress-Development.html

I prefer Australian Companies like Web Network, who provide free no obligation quotes, since you can meet with them and discuss your ideas, needs and wants.

Shoosh Monkey IT Solutions do websites that are inexpensive and modern. http://www.shooshmonkey.com
Here’s some examples of two Canberra businesses who had their website created or redesigned:
http://www.arvwrepairs.com.au
http://www.blitzsecurity.com.au

Hope that helps.

I was asking my son if he knew of any local website designers who were reliable and not too expensive. I just want something simple. The suggestions on this thread seem to be a bit dated now so he came up with a few names, but these ANU students stand out. They are called Wedje Designs http://www.wedje.net/. Prices seem better than most and they do sites for University groups as well as small businesses.

http://www.simple-websites-direct.com.au

Their work and services was excellent.

I highly recommend Zenneo Design http://www.zenneo.com . It is run by two local brothers that really know what their customers want. They organised everything for my website from the hosting to design and explained their recommendations in detail. I got a free set of business cards that matched my new website design and they even manage all my desired changes for a small monthly fee. If you want someone who manages it all end to end then definitely contact the guys as Zenneo Design.

I think every business is different and there are plenty of solutions out there to suit every need.

Design/visual aspect is not the only important factor in the success of your website. You need to take the time to plan your web strategy and set some goals. Don’t do something for the sake of it. Take the time to understand your website visitors and then present your website to manage their expectations accordingly.

Whether you are a micro business looking for low cost websites or a large enterprise looking to embrace digital economy, you can take advantage of our FREE 1 hour website analysis and consultation. (Not sales pitch)

You can request your FREE Website Analysis and Consultation on http://synapseworldwide.crushpath.me/sam-gupta

It is important to plan everything around your web strategy and keep it focused towards your goals.

We truly believe in the potential of Canberra businesses and would love to help you succeed online.

The best way to set up a website is to purchase a template from a site like themeforest for around $35, purchase server space (~$15 per month) and purchase a domain name.

You then install a free content management system (such as wordpress, which RiotACT uses incidentally) to your server and just edit the template.

Yes it’s a bit more work than paying someone, but why pay thousands to a web developer to start something from scratch when there are extremely slick looking customisable templates available that will cost no more than $300per year?

Excellent advice. For example, you could find a web host that provides nopCommerce site installation if you want to sell stuff online, and then search for templates that have colours, fonts etc that you want. You can use a helper application like Microsoft’s WebMatrix to test things on your local machine at first. It will take a few hours to configure your own site, but you’ll be able to do everything yourself and not have to pay someone by the hour to make mistakes.

Just learn how to do it yourself, it’s way better.

That is why their website is slanted at 30 degrees?

Nothing says usability to me like having to tilt my head to avoid a migraine.

Not to mention that the website doesn’t render properly in IE.

Due to the angle I’d be surprised if it rendered in anything properly. Gotta give the poor little pixels a chance!

From a pure design point of view it doesn’t look *that* bad. But it’s just a really dumb way to present work online.

Beware paying for anything upfront! Never a good idea, really, and especially not with websites. No incentive to deliver a good product. And also beware paying ongoing fees to support websites.

Having had dealings with a number of outfits, I cannot highly enough recommend Agileware. Prompt, well priced, polite, excellent work and all round good people.
