Looking for the end of the world in Canberra?

My son and some friends are doing an amateur video production about what would have happened if the world really did end on 12.21.12. They’re looking for suitably end of the world shooting locations that are publicly accessible. It is okay if the locality is on private property but can be filmed as background from a public area. Such as for example the alien looking sewage works out at the back end of Dunlop which can be filmed from a nearby public road. In the scene they shot there the actors simply carried on a conversation as they walked past the scene on the road in the foreground.

They would prefer to film at publicly accessible sites though.

Examples of locations they are looking for include:

  • Overgrown roads or sections of highway where it is possible to clearly tell it once was a road.
  • Derelict buildings both large and small.
  • Striking natural scenery suitable for a ‘camp site’ location.
  • Other end of the world looking locations.

It is preferred the locations be fairly quiet to allow for good audio quality when shooting scenes.

We’ve already found some good places like the previously mentioned alien sewage works, the mine workings at Captain’s Flat and some nice former Federal Highway alignment out at Lake George, but all suggestions are most welcome. Some closer to Canberra would be nice.

Old Tuggeranong Road, just off the Monaro Hwy next to the paintball park.

The grounds of Kenmore Hospital in Goulburn.

Sorry for typo. Gungahlin.

Barely noticed, but this seems like as opportune time as any to ask why my gps pronounces it gunga-helion?

Some very eerie views of Gunghalin with the ultra-clean, empty houses crowding in on the few survivors might work. The old servo in Lyneham might be a possibility, too, and various demolition sites in Braddon. Empty buses at wherever the ACTION buses go overnight might look good. It’s hard to know exactly what your son and his friends have in mind. Have all the people (except for the inevitable handful) died?

I sometimes think a film showing all the people dead with kangaroos and cockatoos venturing into Civic would be fun.

I hope they post the vid where we can see it, eventually.

I woke up in a bus depot after teenage-shenanigans once, having past-out drunk on the back seat. Sorry to say I think they lock them up pretty tightly of an evening.

When I was living in Campbell as a teenager about 8 years ago I saw what looked to be a bunch of abandoned office buildings down near the lake end of Anzac Parade. Couldn’t tell you if they’re still there or still abandoned though, but it’d be worth checking out.

Most of the newer buildings at ANU (e.g. JCMSR) look suitably alien …

Yarralumla brickworks

Not sure if it’s still all burnt out, but Mt Stromlo observatory was looking pretty post apocalyptic last time I saw it.

Try the entrance to royalla on the monaro highway. Derelict bldg, old train track and station hut, big rusted metal thing.

If your going to be doing a Nevile Shute ‘ on the beach’ thing, how about around the empty Guvy buildings in Woden. On new years day there wouldn’t be too many souls about, and there’s bound to be a bit of rubbish paper flying about to give it ‘that look’.

Anywhere South of Mt Taylor. Oh and you’ll get zombies/post apocalypse mutants too by the truckload. Really, you should try the abbatoir just outside Goulburn. Lots of big buildings with the railway beside it and not a soul about.

The causeway?

Dairy Flat Road. Oh, and certain areas east of the Kingston Foreshore redev look pretty desolate at times.

There’s an old stretch of road that goes from point hut crossing up to jim pike avenue that is closed to cars, also orroral valley and honeysuckle creek former tracking station sites and there are some old shelters of some sort along paddys river road (further down from the cotter) I think they are on private property though, they’re right next to the river

Most of Belco?
