Katy Gallagher has announced that the first quarter of this year saw a 20% increase in the numbers of births in ACT Hospitals from the same period last year.

The baby boom is starting to kick in. We can only hope we can find schools for them all in six years.

My recent $4000 was used up in medical fees: obstetrician, anaesthetist, pediatrician, hospital excess. Next time I’m going public and buying a plasma screen TV – or maybe I’ll join emd on the lounge room floor.

Childcare is a debacle everywhere and is set to get a lot worse.
Yet Peter Costello tells us there is no problem. And John Howard openly admits he thinks women should stay home.
Our local lot don’t seem to have anything to say about it.

I had my three without the baby bonus.

The last one starts school next year – and can go to the school in our suburb.

There is always a waiting list at her daycare and she doesn’t go to the one in our suburb as it was full – even when I tried to put her on the list when I was 5 months pregnant.

Childcare is an issue in Canberra and it isn’t being addressed.

JB is right though with a 20% increase in births (lets assume 2-3% won’t be in the ACT at age 5) then there will be a need for more childcare and schools.

Just wanted to add that seepi’s right. We’re having #3 sometime soon, private ob, even with private health insurance we’ll be out of pocket over $3K.

Maybe I could just skip the whole hospital stats, private ob, pay parking at hospital thing and give birth on the lounge room floor. Will get carpet cleaning recommendations first though.

And we don’t have a homebirth midwife in the ACT due to the insurance problem.

I wonder what the breakdown is of caesareans in public vs private hospitals? The stats in that publication are for births in public hospitals, and caesareans in all hospitals.

Private services will pretty much use up your 4 grand baby bonus too.

It would be nice to have more choice in midwifery and childbirth services. A friend recently tried to get into the Birth Centre at Canberra hospital 2 weeks after conception, only to be told that it was full. That’s a bit poor. Other options include private services (huge chance of having a caesarean) or the public hospitals (higher level of interventions than the birth centre)…

[queue the NRMA ad jingle]

I’m going to buy a new boat with my next one

[queue that funny looking lady with the round head telling you to switch to NRMA]

Unfortunately with the baby bonus we have a sort of crude reverse eugenics program happening at the moment.

Cool, bring it on. Lot’s of future taxpayers to fund my retirement!

20% increase this year. Yes we definately need schools in 5 or 6 years, but it seems we need daycare NOW… wonder why Minister Mummy and her offsider Corbell have no plan for dedicated childcare sites….

And midwives to deliver them all now.
Thats something they hadn’t thought of obviously.
The $4000 baby bonus wouldn’t have anything to do with it? Maybe they all need a new plasma screen?
