Lots more space in the "Park and Ride" carparks....

I have been wondering how the Park and Ride carparks were going to be ‘managed’ with the advent of MyWay. Up till now you could buy your (4) tickets on line apply for and get a Park and Ride voucher for your nominated carpark.

This worked well for the people who worked at say, Woden but lived at Belconnen or vice versa (particularly if they had a PO Box at Woden or Belco) and a mate who was interested in buying reduced price bus tickets.

No more. The MyWay website gives us the news:

How to get a Park and Ride Permit:

The MyWay Administration Office will check your account balance and relevant travel history to ensure you are entitled to a permit. Permits will be issued for the following calendar month and mailed to your nominated address.

So now Action are checking the travel history this scam has become a whole lot harder. Watch the Park and Ride carparks empty……..

This would make a lot of sense. I wonder if they have thought of it. Making parking machines which you can pay for with the same card would be a pretty good idea anyway.

They have thought of using smartcards for pay parking. It’s listed as a Transport for Canberra project. See here: http://www.transport.act.gov.au/studies_projects/smart_parking.html

Perth already has a Park n Ride system which costs $2 per day paid via Smartrider card (Perth’s MyWay equivalent). It is conditional on catching a train or bus using the Smartrider on the same day. Since Canberra is using the same Smartcard technology as Perth, it wouldn’t be too hard to adopt this system here (without actually charging extra for the parking – you would just need to display the daily ticket + the permit).

Should be able to sack the inpectors at the parking lots then 🙂

What they should (and possibly will) do is install parking machines which require you to tag on to get a ticket for that day and cross-check that to the Park n Ride permits.

$90 is a bit rich though. That’s a lot of money to keep on the card.

Current rule is to purchase a monthly ticket ($92.50) or 4 Faresaver 10 tickets ($100.80). So $90 is not unreasonable. The requirement is (hopefully) not to keep the card at $90 but to have $90 credit when you apply for the permit.

Checking history also won’t work if you’ve suddenly changed jobs or your job has moved.

Fair enough that they are trying to prevent scams, but I haven’t court more then a couple of buses a year the last few years, and have paid cash when I do. If I wanted to commence such a service, how would they check my history?

They can’t check anyone’s travel history since the cards have just come in. Presumably that will happen when you try and renew.

They won’t have a history for anyone on day 1, so presumably it will be a case of progressively weeding out the scammers.

How dare they make scamming them more difficult!
