Canberra musician Lucy Sugerman is once again proving she is all grown up with the release of what she describes as her ‘mouthiest’ track yet.

The single, golden boy, which is all about the messy, angry aftermath of a break-up, is from her debut EP, which is set to drop later this year.

Co-penned and produced with two of her friends, Charlie Hole (Thomas Porter) and Hannah Brewer (Brewer), it’s packed full of sharp insults and barbed comments that very much take aim at her ex.

“We had a lot of fun writing it and thinking of the silliest lines we could,” says Lucy.

While Lucy says she no longer feels that way anymore, there was a time when she did.

“It’s something everybody can relate to, and the single is a bit of a record of my feelings at the time,” she says. “I used the anger I felt to actually move on and get through everything.”

Initially, Lucy was apprehensive about releasing the track, but she says it’s been well received so far, particularly when she performs it live.

“Regardless of who’s right or wrong, I hope all my fellow heartbroken and jaded people can relate and have a little chuckle about their decisions in love and things they put up with,” she says.

She’s currently embarking on ‘The Golden Planet’ mini-tour alongside Reverend Bones, with the next show in Melbourne on Saturday, 22 May.

She performed at Kambri, at ANU, on Friday, 30 April, the first standing show she’s been able to perform for her current project, given it all began at the height of COVID-19 restrictions in 2020.

“Everybody was up dancing and singing along, which was a pretty surreal feeling,” says Lucy. “It made it a really good night.”

Local videographer Harry Chalker was also on hand to film a soon-to-be-released live concert video.

Lucy’s says she can’t reveal too much about her debut EP, but common themes of life, love, relationships and coming of age will feature on it.

“It will be a record of me growing out of my teens and becoming an adult – a very formative period,” she says.

Both sonically and lyrically, it’s inspired by her favourite era – the 1970s – with lots of retro and low-fi sounds throughout.

Lucy definitely has a full plate at the moment. She’s studying music at ANU, working as a chiropractor’s assistant, writing her own and other people’s music, performing corporate gigs and at weddings, as well as producing the EP.

“Getting back into study has been a little tricky after the two gap years I took, but I really enjoy it and I know how important education is,” she says.

Lucy also says that all of these crazy times are worth it. After all, she’s been dreaming of releasing an EP or album and touring since she was a child.

“I guess you could say I am almost overcommitted at the moment,” she says. “But I like being busy and I work better this way.”

She also credits her “very tolerant” support network of family and friends for helping her get through hectic periods.

Lucy singing Golden Boy reminds me a lot of some of Kate Miller-Heidke … That’s a BIG compliment…
