Lyneham bike path resurfacing also unloved

Following yesterday’s “(Re)surfacing epic fail x 2“:

The cycle path between Mouat St and the intersection of Wattle & Scrivener streets recently received similar treatment. The path had been cracking for years, and small sections were completely replaced about a year ago. Recently, the remaining cracks were “repaired” with long snaking smears of black goop & the whole path was resurfaced 1-2 weeks ago.

Here are some shots of the new path. The contractors (?) didn’t smooth down the surface properly in many areas, leaving multiple rough sections along much of the path. The worst section is the 4 way intersection halfway along the path, with with an uneven surface and loose gravel:

Also, toward Wattle St, the workers patched the surface over pre-existing roots, leaving lumpy sections (not pictured) and rough patches:

How someone could fail to notice this/roll it flat is beyond me. This botched job has left riders with a nice rough surface, worse than the original.

Contrast this to the nearby cycle paths which are in far better condition:

tuco, at least when they resurface that they make it smooth… a little TOO smooth if you ask me!

So it’s not just me that looks at bike paths and sees sites for “improvements” – drops, berms, pinches …Thanks Nifty!

Which is why we have the railing at the T by the next tunnel south of the dam. People used to dig it out for fun moves. Trouble is, hole looks just like path at night. It was a death trap for commuters.

Aeek – just so we are clear – I did not dig a hole on the path near the dam. I was not on the grassy knoll either.

Nup, there are a couple of spots on the lap of LBG where I get air on my CX bike while I am doing a lunch time lap…….not much air, but air none the less 😛

I’ll see your black goop and raise you the asbestos they are still pulling out of my favourite bike track.

You sure the work is finished? They looked like this briefly in Giralang/Kaleen before they were fixed up.

I like to think you have me to thank for that because I bitched like a reality-show-housewife on Fix My Street the week after the initial re-sealing. (They even managed to drive their truck over the fresh seal leaving behind a bunch of tire ruts!)

They use a low-temperature “hot-mix” machine that spreads luke-warm goop on the path as if they’re icing a cake. Trouble is, the machine’s rollers are flat and the paths are not, so anywhere there’s an existing bump or rise in the path they risk spreading it too thinly.

Ha! Thanks then!

My neighbours have no idea how lucky they are with all the things I submit to Fix My Street myself! Trees across the path, Transact cables down, missed garbage collections, potholes, illegal dumping, missing street signs – all fixed by me! 🙂 …quietly waiting for Canberran/Australian of the year award..

Generally an excellent service too. Reported a dumped bed Tuesday, gone yesterday!

I walk along this path to commute to work.

What is disconcerting is that my foot seems to sink in to this goop ever so slightly when I walk over it.
It’s almost like the goop they lay around playgrounds, in order to provide a cushion for children who decide to let gravity do its work.

Whether that was intentional for this cycling path, I do not know.
But, yes, you can bet that cyclist will get the thrill from momentary loss of control when their wheels sink in to the ground.

Remember to report problems with paths to the proper people: Canberra Connect.

Actually this, do this.

Remember to report problems with paths to the proper people: Canberra Connect.

Report it to TAMS as a safety issue (which it is).

Last thing they want is to be held liable for someone hitting some loose gravel at speed and badly injuring themselves.
