Lyneham Hall enters the landscape

The Canberra Times has a story on the transformation of the old Lyneham Motor Inn into “Lyneham Hall” as ANU again struggles to warehouse the influx of first years.

‘Lyneham Hall” will house a mix of 118 undergraduate and postgraduate domestic and international students and will no longer take private bookings from members of the public.

While the ANU is in the midst of a massive accommodation building project within its ANU Exchange precinct – which will eventually house thousands of students adjacent to campus – it has been forced to look to private hotels and motels on the northside to house its students under the accommodation guarantee.

The ANU already accommodates 24 students at the Carotel Motel and Caravan Park in Watson and 39 students at the Rex Hotel in Braddon. Last year 152 students lived at the now-demolished City Gate Motel in Lyneham. As with the other hotel accommodation, the Lyneham Motor Inn will undergo some building works to turn it from a motel into a student hall.

At $164 a week Lyneham Hall won’t be such a bad option.

And Lo ! It came to pass .. .. and the Northside Community’s NCCC will be receiving a report on their Agenda on Tuesday 21 April 2015. The Agenda includes both the Motor Inn’s redevelopment, and an item related to community consultations about DAs. Check out the Lyneham Community Association Inc.’s likely NIMBYs’ responses. They are unhappy about the AXIS Apartments built on the corner, as well as being particularly unhappy with the Brindabella Christian College’s Brigalow Street, Lyneham campus’s DA, which had to be withdrawn in the face of allegations of it was an ‘open space’ public-land-grab conspiracy, as well as that their consutarions have been more honoured in the breach .. ..
See Twitter’s @Lyneham_Oval and @Lyneham_ACT and @ourBCC for some social media perceptions. There are two long-standing objections discussed on TheRiotACT associated with Lyneham Oval adjacent to the school in 2009 and in 2104, now pending further developments with a revised BCC DA and its consultations. LCA Inc meets at the Old Canberra Inn to brain storm its anti-DA ideas of ‘openspace’ ( of course, that is Not to call it ‘lebensraum’, surely !).

Like the other motel down the road on the corner of Mouat and Northbourne that also had been converted to a uni hall, I predict this one will be slated re-development as units down the track.
