Andrew Barr has announced big changes to the National Sports Club at Lyneham:

The Government’s $4 million investment will focus on the tennis court component of the redevelopment and will complement Tennis Australia’s commitment to bring a range of events to Lyneham each year such as Junior Tour events, Australian Money Tournaments, National Junior Championships and Pro Tour events.

Once completed, the facility will have:
• a gymnasium,
• aquatic facilities: a 25m indoor pool and outdoor pools,
• 14 hard court tennis courts (10 outdoor, 4 indoor)
• 8 sand-filled artificial grass tennis courts,
• 6 clay tennis courts,
• 6 squash courts,
• a cafe and lounge area,
• ancillary specialty shops, and
• Tennis ACT administration offices and meeting spaces.

And never a penny for motorsport.

What about Canberra’s extensive road system? Or am I mistaking the morning commute for a sport?

While the PSGP may resemble motorsport, I don’t believe it has any official status.

Great! Perhaps Canberra will be able to host ATP events! Go Roger!

fantastic news! the centre is well overdue for a major overhaul.

it seems a bit unfortunate about the indoor cricket nets, but maybe another mixed sports centre is in line for similar reworking and the resulting theme will be more skewed towards indoor cricket space (which is also perfect for dodgeball!).

I suppose the question becomes who will become the NATIONAL indoor cricket centre now?

Lyneham are the self-styled National Indoor Cricket Centre. They aren’t regarded as such by anyone who is in a position to decide such things.

In any event, I think it’s a bit disgusting that they’re sweeping aside the indoor cricket complex like this. Sure, Lyneham have six months to relocate, but the likelihood of finding somewhere (to say nothing of the expense of relocating if they do) is unlikely.

Where will these players go? Is Kaleen still open? Do they have the ability to run a centre like Lyneham? Ie successful…..;)

Kaleen are still open, they simply haven’t had anything resembling a substantial cricket competition for some years. I would imagine that, should Lyneham fail to relocate, Kaleen will pick up the bulk of the teams and resume indoor cricket as a competition. Whether their administration is capable of retaining those teams is another ball game. They did, after all, run their indoor cricket comps into the ground. That was arguably deliberate, however, as they made more dollars from soccer as I understand it.

Not to mention that the rent for the cricket centre was the sports club major income? Where will this money come from in the future?

That is very much their problem.

The Queanbeyan council just recently built a new indoor centre for its people, surely the ACT Govt can build one for North Canberra?

I would imagine that if the ACT Govt were going to throw money at something like this it’d probably happen in Gungahlin, and not for some time. I would have hoped that, given their decision to effectively fund NICC out of their current location, the government would be providing financial assistance in relocating the business. Sure, it would be an unusual step to take, but given its dual role as a business and as a community sporting facility, its loss will be very, very noticeable.

Well Kaleen doesn’t have cricket (at the moment) so that leaves Weston, Kambah and Queanbeyan.

that sucks (about the NICC). Okay they weren’t perfect at organising competitions but they were better than some. Anyone ever play at CISAC when they had a cricket centre.

I suppose the question becomes who will become the NATIONAL indoor cricket centre now?

No cricket centre in the new plans. Will close down on the 1st of October. Shame really… 100+ indoor cricket teams, junior indoor cricket on Fridays and junior clinics during the school holidays and 50+ indoor soccer teams on a Sunday. Where will these players go? Is Kaleen still open? Do they have the ability to run a centre like Lyneham? Ie successful…..;)

So $4M for the tennis players. Good on them.

I am in the unfortunate position of not knowing one.

And never a penny for motorsport.

Perhaps because The Government’s $4 million investment will focus on the tennis court component of the redevelopment

I see no mention of the National Indoor Cricket Centre, which is part of the existing complex.
