Lyneham wetlands resistance

The Canberra Times brings word that the experts of Lyneham are displeased by plans to knock down 160 large trees to build them an oval watering wetland.

Lindsay Nothrop said local residents had raised 49 issues of concern with the ACT Environment Department, including the project’s pumping operations, water quality and flood data underpinning its design and the necessity to clear 160 large trees to build the wetlands.

Mr Nothrop said after attending a technical briefing by ACT Environment staff and project consultants earlier this year, he concluded the wetlands’ design ”was largely based on computer modelling and guesswork” due to lack of detailed local catchment water data.

Simon Corbell, however, is confident in his numbers.

If there’s one thing the residents of Lyneham and O’Connor are good at, it’s whingeing when any public plan to change anything about their overrated suburbs is suggested. When the GDE was planned to go through a small section of dusty firetrails and old tracks, rubbish dumps and struggling clumps of trees, it was as though the powers were destroying the last remnants of the original garden of Eden.

I agree the issues with the GDE were a bit OTT, but the new wetlands in O’Connor on Banksia St seemed to go through without too much fuss.

They will have their day in the spotlight, then retire to their studies to slip on the Sennhauser headsets and sweep the air with the baton, self-satisifed that they could have out-conducted Karajan if only given the chance.

There were similar comments and concerns before the wetland behind the O’Connor shops was built about a decade ago. It’s much smaller, and I think something like 40 trees were taken out. Go and check it out now. There’s now way more trees than there used to be, many of which are now quite tall. There’s also more bird life by several orders of magnitude, not to mention other biodiversity.

The proposed site in Lyneham is much larger, and not subject to anything like the traffic that the O’Connor site was or is. The wetland will likely breath some life into the site. Perhaps grumpmachine and Mr Notrhop live very nearby (e.g backing on in De Burg St) and are worried that other people might begin using the area and enjoying it.

No need to worry about mosquito plagues, either.

Well, it’s going to look absolutely fab after all the trees have been cut down, the habitat for the cockatoos and magpies destroyed…ugh.
