Maccas lands in the bus interchange

After months of construction the Civic bus interchange now has a McDonalds.

If you’re looking for something to do during this hiatus period then it’s well worth dropping into.

Never will you see so very many people so furiously engaged in achieving so little as the new team beds in.

Civics cafes and eateries will need to stay on their game now that the bog standard is now so centrally and prominently located.

Just out of interest I went in thinking they might have a new menu featuring healthy food. No, they still have cheeseburgers, Big Macs and the other rubbish.

They do have healthy options, just the vast majority of people come for cheap fast food.

Yeah well going to Macca’s for a salad is like going to a brothel for a hug.

Personally i have not eaten Macca’s food this century.

After living OS for several years, i returned to Australia and i was struck by how Macca’s had pervaded the country, by stealth. Probably needed to be away to notice the difference, in the same was as you don’t notice a child growing when you see them every day. I thought i had landed in Midwest USA. It’s gone now, but there was a HUGE sign where those vulgar golden arches on the highway at Goulburn, there was a huge sign saying “MacDonald’s welcomes you to historic Goulburn”

WTF?????? MacDonald’s welcoming me to a lovely AUSTRALIAN town? Put me off for life.

Er, no it isn’t. Either your memory is rubbish, or somehow you went through a wormhole every time you ate at Maccas in Weston in the 1970s.

Except the 70% of it that isn’t and has been introduced in the last 5 years. Honestly, comprehension skills on here are abysmal.

Fancy new store, same old “lack of” service. They don’t even have a drive through to look after and takes as long to get the food. It doesn’t help that there are only 1 or 2 staff at the counter and they only take one order at a time, ie. order food, wait till cooked/packaged/paid for…then take next order. Just like KFC does. Fast food has never been so slow.

I was in Garema Place at lunch time today and found that the unmistakable stench of McDonalds has permeated the entire area. It makes me curious why Maccas seems to be the only eatery with an odour so uniquely pungent you know there’s a restaurant somewhere nearby long before you actually see the golden arches.

For me, Subway is the “restaurant” that has the stench that you can’t miss, never really noticed the Maccas smell (it can’t be as bad as Subway, surely?)

KFC stinks worse than all of them combined.

KFC, HJ’s, Maccas & Red Rooter all combined in one area over in Queanbeyan clearly has a unique smell & is the winner in this department.

I could small it in my car as I drove past with the windows up & the AC on on Monday. Yuk.

What a delecious comment.

And no, I don’t work for them, or have anything to do with them professionally. It just seems snobby to continually bag them.

Certainly there is an element of snobbishness/trendy anti-corporatism wrapped up in a lot of the hating, but these shouldn’t be allowed to detract from the legitimate criticisms of the business.

There are issues with the food from a dietary perspective, and combined with how it is marketed and to whom, this creates what is now a social epidemic.

For the more macro corporate issues, books like Fast Food Nation sum up the problems fairly compellingly.

Surprising fact. Police are allowed meal breaks too. You can all get fat together.

Well, it is right opposite the Taxi rank and Krave, couldn’t hurt could it?

A Maccas in the city is hardly marching on the Winter Palace. On the meh meter it rates a 9.

I’m surprised it took so long to have one so central.

That place is gonna be a hellhole on Friday and Saturday nights, what with the location.

Bugger, McFlurries 50 paces from works front door is going to be dangerous………..

I’m not sure why people are so down on Maccas – it’s a great business model and it has stood the test of time. They’re not pretending to serve gourmet food, rather a range of cheap and cheerful items that many people like..

I agree. Don’t like Maccas? Then don’t go there.

There is a lot worse food out there (KFC anyone?) and a lot worse companies out there.
It all comes down to personal choice.

And apparently a lot of people choose to eat there.

(DISCLAIMER – About a quarter of a century ago, whilst going through school and uni I worked at McDonalds, as did many of my generation. It had nothing healthy on its menu then…but by working there I was able to get money to buy alcohol and pot. I also got to meet hot girls, some of whom had sex with me. And I never spat in anyone’s burger.)

Well played sir!

In keeping with the ACT’s policy of ethnic diversity we now have a Scottish Restaurant in the center of our capital.
The colour scheme will blend well with the vomit from the drunks that roam Civic in the early hours.

😀 That’s probably the best post in support of McDonald’s I’ve ever seen.

I think it’s a good thing for the interchange. One less deserted shopfront in any case. I’d certainly feel a bit safer waiting in there for my bus than outside if I found myself needing to catch one later in the evening. Free wi-fi is a bonus too, although if we’re lucky the Government’s investigation of wi-fi on the buses will end with a trial and even a rollout…

Over 30,000 “hamburger” dispensaries around the world. At least their “food” will be better than the dodgy looking pizza slices sold at high profit around Civic late on Saturday nights.

P.S. Anyone want to buy a portable pizza warmer?

I think one of the main reasons they added that Maccas was for the late-night crowd. That sounds OK to me as that is when you need the stodge! 🙂

Speaking of which, if it’s 24 hours, then maybe we didn’t need those nearby public toilets then. Good ol’ free market.

Only kidding.

Gee, must have been a while since I was last in the interchange.

Thats hideous.

Don’t they offer free Wifi at Maccas though?

dunno, but bog standard are, worldwide, good for the bog…

I’ll still be spending my spare time at the Phoenix (assuming the hours coincide).

Its fair to assume the inflatable golden arches is temporary.

I think it will help get foot traffic in the area. imo people are more likely to walk though garema place
