Make Canberra's centenary yours

Jon Stanhope and the centenary taskforce launched a discussion paper and some competitions today to kick off the planning for Canberra’s centenary celebrations in 2013.

Consultation for the events will run until 5 December this year, and will include people from all over Australia as well as Canberrans.

There are two competitions that Canberrans can take part in to help make the centenary feel like something they own: one to design a logo “that will go down in history as the symbol of a once-in-a-lifetime event” and another to suggest events that could make part of the year’s celebrations.

I’m sure with all the talent out there in RA world we can come up with some respectable ideas about the best ways to celebrate (though I suspect bicycle bar crawls wouldn’t make the cut). Anyway, entry forms and more information about the competitions can be found at the link directly above.

The Canberra Times has also gotten in on the act and has managed to find a young boy who will be turning 21 in 2013 on the same day, as far as I can work out, as Canberra’s birthday (it always intrigues me how they manage to find these people — surely they can’t all be friends and acquaintances of the journos?).

I think the centenary is a great opportunity for Canberrans to show how much they enjoy their city, and perhaps reverse some of the negative stereotyping of Canberra that proliferates in the rest of Australia. I was born and bred in Canberra, I love living here, and I am always keen to tell people from outside the ACT why it is great.

Don’t get me wrong, there is a lot that can be improved with Canberra, as there is with every city. But instead of whinging about it, or waiting for a centenary I also get off by butt and do something to make it better.

Seeing as the chief ministers are so excited about the whole thing, they can be the feature attraction. One of them can stand on top of the flagpole on City Hill, another can stand on that chief minister, and then another on that one etc.

It would bring world press attention:
“Well the cheif ministers of canberra have abandoned the traditional ‘cake and singing’ birthday celebrations in favour of standing on each other on a flagpole…it’s a good thing that Canberra doesn’t have a red flag on the pole and bulls…or is it???”

Who gives a shit about a centenarry other than the oldies who have nothing better to do other than watch Coronation Street and write letters to their local Members of Parliament ?

Me for one am still actively persuing how to get a pet camel transported to Canberra.

If there’s something they want to celebrate, why not come up with something other than John Howards turned 100 and he’s still working, so you should all work till the same age too.

How about a $47million dollar pissup (for no reason whatsoever) with a 2litre bottle of orange juice for the non-drinkers instead ?

Don’t care how ethical it is, it’d certainly keep you in parliament till the occasion, and you’d probably remain there for a long while afterwards as well.

K – I used to wonder about that myself. In most cases – this one included – PR people find the person and pass it on to the media as a story idea.
