The days of free parking in the Parliamentary Triangle are officially over. At the same time, finding a reasonably priced long stay car space in the CBD or Braddon is becoming an increasingly frustrating and time consuming exercise.

What’s a commuter to do? Enter Parkhound, an online community that connects drivers with spare car parking spaces sourced from local property owners. Its co-founder, Robert Crocitti, came up with the idea for the service, which has been described as the Airbnb of car spaces, in early 2013 after struggling to find a parking spot at a Melbourne football game.

“With Parkhound, people with spare car parks can make extra income, and drivers can find somewhere to park that’s cheaper and more convenient than alternative parking options,” Robert explains.

Parkhound now has over 1000 car spaces across Australia. Drivers can book online or download the iPhone app to select the time and area they need and choose their preferred parking space from a list of available car parks or driveways.

Parkhound manages bookings on the driver’s behalf, looks after payment transfers and offers a booking guarantee for additional peace of mind.

Renting a car space through Parkhound can save you hundreds of dollars each year. It costs an average of $10.10 per day or $50.86 for the week to rent out a car space via Parkhound in Canberra’s CBD.

Ordinary parking tickets in the same area can easily exceed $12 or $15 per day, while five-day tickets cost upwards of $55—and even then, it’s no guarantee that you’ll actually be able to find a parking space close to work.

Robert says that Parkhound is on the hunt for more car spaces in Canberra, particularly around Braddon, Barton and the Parliamentary Triangle. He points out that Parkhound users conduct more searches for car spaces in Braddon than they do any other location in Australia, which won’t surprise anyone who has ever tried to find last-minute parking on Lonsdale Street. National Circuit isn’t far behind.

“We need more car spaces. If you want more income, here’s an opportunity to make an extra $2000 or $3000 per year, for no additional effort. ” Robert says.

“It’s free to list your car space and the process takes just a few minutes. Parkhound also suggests a price based on your post code during the sign up process, but you’re free to charge as much as you think people are willing to pay.”

In short, there are no insurance implications, it’s the same as parking at your friends house for a BBQ or when you are visiting your parents for dinner. A commercial car park firm is not responsible for any damage to people’s cars and neither are you. If something happens to the car, the driver will need to claim it on their insurance.

Should people be checking out their insurance polices before renting out their driveway?

Great idea this.

I can’t really work out the Braddon fuss either. there is the big outdoor carpark right at the end of braddon, or the supabarn carpark.

People want street parking in braddon, but that is naturally limited – and I’m sure a big new multi storey in braddon would ruin the ambience.

Things may become pretty interesting when they start building on the outdoor carpark though.

I find Braddon interesting. I’ve just started working in Braddon on a job and have had no issues finding shortterm or day parking in or within 5 minutes walk of Braddon. Even the Canberra Centre $10 rooftop parking isn’t that far away. I’ve walked further in the Parliamentary triangle. I think some people want a carpark within 50m of everywhere they go. I’m sure this app is of use for that kind of person.
