Maker culture in Canberra. Make, Hack, Void

johnboy 6 December 2011 4

The Economist is having a look at the rise of “maker” culture and what it could mean to the world.

If you’re wondering how to get involved the good news is that Canberra does have a maker space; “Make, Hack, Void”.

Being a nerdy pursuit they even have an IRC channel.

(Full disclosure – I’m a Make Hack Void cofounder & the current secretary.)

Stiffman, it’s good to hear you were keen. If it makes things any more attractive, since opening in January we’ve cut our monthly membership rate ($40, $20 concession) and you can pay month-to-month. We also have casual access pay-per-visit options if you just want to get your feet wet.

Even better, our regular Maker Meetups are totally free for anyone to turn up and check the place out, meet some like-minded folk, see or show some projects, and have a chat. We are actually having one tonight at 6:30! (details on the web site.)

OK, that’s probably about enough blatant plugging for one comment. 🙂

I enjoy making things myself, and I did consider joining Make Hack Void. Access to the extra tools they have would be pretty handy, but in the end, I decided the $50 / month in 6 month increments was too much for me. I’ve collected enough tools to do most things I want to do at home by myself, so I decided against joining.

I do understand the attraction to these maker spaces, with like minded people, knowledgeable people, and tools you wouldn’t normally have access to.
and I understand being an actual space, with a lot of equipment to maintain, so there are rent, and other ongoing costs.

for me, and the amount of stuff I do, I’m happy to do what i can with what I have, which leaves me money for other things.

As a member, I heartily endorse this event or product. It’s great fun and very rewarding to make your own stuff or re-purpose/improve existing stuff, and there are some super smart/talented/friendly people in the MHV group who are always happy to share knowledge and help out. And, come the apocalypse, these will be good people to have around.
