Chief Minister Stanhope has announced an exciting new signature to his autograph collection.

No, wait, it’s another tree planted at the arboretum, this time by former Prime Minister Malcolm Fraser.

It had been previously thought that Mr Stanhope hated all Liberals. But a Liberal who leaves the Liberal party can be forgiven much one imagines.

Speaking at today’s ceremony, Mr Stanhope said this latest tree planting represented the growing national importance of the Arboretum.

“It is fitting that Malcolm Fraser, a former Prime Minister of Australia, should plant the iconic River red gum, a tree which is familiar to so many Australians,” Mr Stanhope said today.

The River red gum is commonly found alongside inland water courses where it can grow to 45 metres.

It has smooth bark, ranging in colour from white and grey to red-brown which is shed in long ribbons.

The gum joins several trees planted by Heads of State and Heads of Government in the Central Valley including from Australia, New Zealand, Hungary, Bulgaria, Botswana, Maldives, Timor-Leste and Mongolia.

Having bagged Big Mal surely Hawkey and Gough are just a matter of time?

Also, a public viewing day is coming up on 20 March.

Replace ‘national’ with ‘self-‘ and ‘the Arboretum’ with ‘my legacy’.

ABC News said last night that all living ex-PM’s would be invited to plant a tree at the Arboretum- which includes John Howard.

Does anyone else get embarrassed that this is what we do with anyone with a media profile who comes to Canberra?

And when do we simply rename it the Jon Stanhope Memorial Arboretum?
