A Dunlop man will be summonsed to court after allegedly being found in possession of a range of drugs in the city overnight.

CCTV operators allege they saw a man taking drugs in Garema Place, Canberra City, at about 12:30 am (23 December).

Officers searched the man and said they discovered a “significant quantity” of drugs and cash, including:

  • 14 Diazepam tablets
  • 32 LSD patches
  • 4 clip-seal bags of suspected cocaine
  • 1 clip-seal bag of suspected heroin
  • 1 Xanax tablet
  • 1 Modafinil tablet
  • 1 container of THC chewables
  • $440 cash.

While legislation was passed earlier this year to decriminalise small amounts of illicit drugs, it doesn’t come into effect until October 2023.

It remains a criminal offence to possess illicit or pharmaceutical drugs without a prescription.

The police cameras are everywhere in the city. For an example of what one looks like, go to the bus ticket machine at the city bus interchange next to the R4 bus stop.

Imo I much prefer these cameras compared to NSW Police approach of having gangs of 5-10 coppers walking around.

Even if the new regulations were in effect, they would not protect this individual because 32 tabs of acid is not ‘personal use’. If individuals do not comply with the regulations, then they have to wear the consequences.

They’ve specified the maximum amounts of each drug someone will be able carry to avoid copping a charge, but does that mean they can carry those amounts of all 8 drugs at once, be some type of supermarket roaming around civic?
