A 40-year-old Parkes man has been arrested for allegedly assaulting a 71-year-old man on the front lawns of Old Parliament house yesterday (Wednesday 22 January).

Around 10.40am, police were called to the location after receiving reports of two men fighting, with one man striking the other with a large stick.
Police arrived at the scene to find the victim covered in blood and with numerous injuries.

The elderly man stated he had been assaulted by the 40 year-old man and that the offender’s dog, a bullmastiff or similar, had also mauled him.

It is alleged the offender threatened to attack him further.

ACT Ambulance Services attended the scene and treated the victim who was then conveyed to The Canberra Hospital for further assessment.

Police contacted ACT Domestic Animal Services who provided a notice to the 40-year-old man for the seizure of his dog.

Around 12.15pm, police arrested the man and conveyed him to City Police Station where he was charged with assault and allowing a dog to attack a person.
The man will appear in court next month.
