Man caught DUI ten times over the limit

Thumper 15 January 2008 40

When I first heard this on the news I thought to myself, ‘ten times, he must be dead’. Then I heard that he was a P plater, thus the legal limit is 0.02, which is actually quite a piddling little reading.

And being a P plater I naturally assumed it was some randon young bloke.

However this idiot was 38 years old and was observed in his silver Toyota Starlet swerving across a street in Canberra’s inner south.

Police allege his breath test reading was 0.217.

Welcome to life without a licence for the next couple of years.

I don’t see any politicians making statements about this guy getting his car crushed into a cube…

He probably wasn’t speeding or being a hoon, so it would have been safe.

Is it too hard to change it to 217 milligrams per 100 millilitres of blood ?

Doesn’t take a rocket scientist to work out that when you are talking about litres, you should be talking in grams, and when you are talking about millilitres, you should be talking in milligrams.

.217grams per 100 millilitres of blood is the correct term.
Whilst some may think that is pretty low, there has only been a few around the .250 mark. Any more than that any your at the state where you cant even pull your keys out of your pocket!

GnT: thanks… I did mean that, I was tired.

It is definately grams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood though. 🙂

Why don’t they change the decimal marker then so it sounds like a decent number.

Here’s an article about a dog getting to 1.6 – sounds heaps sexier. http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2008/01/08/2133613.htm

JJJmonkey I don’t think you’re right. I think it’s 0.217 grams (or millilitres) of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood.

…and ending with “the Premier State” or “the Sunshine State” too.

“Yes, but what you are saying is that 0.217% of this persons bloodstream was alcohol.

Sounds like 2 fifths of f*ck all.”

Its actually 2.17 grams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood.

Number plates starting with ‘DC’ or ‘DX’ are usually a good indicator of hopeless fkwits, p1.

Both of those are already available for those running Safari, Jazz 🙂 (you can stretch the comments box as much as you want)

What new features are you gonna give _them_? 😀

Maelinar: I would have thought this would be obvious, but clearly what is “2 fifths of f*ck all” depends entirely upon the substance in question. It takes a lot less than 0.217% of your bloodstream to be, say, Plutonium, to totally ruin your day.

Fun fact: Coma becomes a distinct possibility at about 0.35 BAC, and almost certain above 0.40 (with death to follow). So 0.217 is pretty far from buggerall, wouldn’t you say?

And won’t actually auto-resolve the usual arguments about there\their, than\then, effect\affect, correct use of the apostrophe, etc.
And effective English grammar checking is really hard to code for.

Skidbladnir Skidbladnir 4:07 pm 15 Jan 08

Spellcheckers without massive dictionaries and grammar options will result in strangeness.

Jazz Jazz 3:59 pm 15 Jan 08

not quite and edit option. allowing that completely throws off the continuity of discussion in a thread.

we are however including a spell checker (for all the pedants out there) and a comment preview which i’d encourage people to use if they arent sure of what they are writing. oh, and a much bigger comments box as well 🙂

I think I’d have to be that pissed to even get in a Starlet, let alone drive it anywhere.

lumnock lumnock 3:32 pm 15 Jan 08

I think this news post proves, if nothing else, that there should be an edit option for news posts and their comments. Hopefully something that’ll be put in place with the site upgrade and all.

Mælinar Mælinar 3:06 pm 15 Jan 08

Yes, but what you are saying is that 0.217% of this persons bloodstream was alcohol.

Sounds like 2 fifths of f*ck all.
