Light rail vehicle on tracks

A man is in hospital in a stable condition after he was hit walking across the light rail network this morning (9 March).

Around 7:47 am, emergency services were called to attend an accident at the intersection of Cooyong Street and Northbourne Avenue in Canberra City.

ACT Fire and Rescue firefighters and ACT Ambulance Service Paramedics treated a male pedestrian. He was transported to Canberra Hospital in a stable condition with leg and upper body injuries.

The pedestrian remained conscious and was not trapped under the vehicle.

An ACT Policing spokesperson said the collision was under investigation.

A Transport Canberra and City Services spokesperson said light rail vehicles will continue to operate along the corridor despite the accident and reminded the community to be “fully aware” of the vehicles.

“Transport Canberra remind the community of light rail testing underway and urge the community to be safe crossing intersections,” the spokesperson said.

“It is important for motorists and pedestrians to be aware that light rail vehicles are now running between Gungahlin and the City and that they are silent, large and travel quickly.

“It is important that pedestrians and motorists pay attention to their surroundings. If everybody obeys the road rules, particularly around red lights, everyone will be safe.

“We urge everyone in the community to be alert when walking and cycling near light rail and please observe the traffic signals and road rules so that we all stay safe.”

Surely the solution is to fit the nose of each tram with one of these sneaky gadgets –

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2018-10-11/anti-loitering-devices-a-breach-of-human-rights-advocates-say/10364766

so that cool, “vibrant”, tram-loving young pedestrians (voters), can be given fair warning, and recalcitrant tram-sceptic oldies can be culled from the electoral rolls…..

Anyone bisected by a tram should get two votes at all subsequent elections.

Maybe the police were still there to determine how much spin there is when the incident was really the result of the tram not being fitted with a Bombardier’s Obstacle Detection System.

It was the first but it won’t be the last.

That will never happen down here in Tuggers.

I hope you are right on that one.

Tuggeranong has been positively idyllic during all of this COVID 19 nonsense; I have never seem so many people enjoying Lake Tuggeranong, and apart from the temporary bouts of madness some Southsiders have during the morning peak hour traffic, everything down here has been fine.

Well he deserves a medal or a plaque or something. He has made history.

If he had of tried a bit harder he would have got a Darwin Award!

Must be annoying for the light rail team because today they were starting testing by operating to an operational timetable. And a couple of hours in this!

I drove down Northborne at 6am (heading to the balloon Fiesta) and saw 5 trams between the Barton Highway and the city.

I also passed back passed this incident about 830. Tram and police were still there, had thought it must have had a technical problem not that it hit someone.
