ACT Policing will summons a 25-year-old man to face the ACT Magistrates Court after an incident involving a ‘BB’ gun yesterday afternoon (7 July).

About 1.20pm, police received a report that a man driving a green Holden Frontera in Phillip was in possession of a firearm. Police responded and later located the vehicle of interest in Banks, conducting a traffic stop on Pockett Street.

Further police enquiries led to the seizure of a ‘BB’ pellet gun, which had been modified to look like a firearm, at a house in Banks. ?Police apprehended a 25-year-old Banks man at the same residence.

The man will be summonsed to face the ACT Magistrates Court at a later date in relation to possession of an offensive weapon.

I got an air rifle for Xmas when I was 13 (1969). We lived in the suburbs – I had a hoot & I shot bottles, snakes, birds & rats. Lots of kids had them & nobody seemed to mind.

Except the injured wildlife.

No one cares about wind turbines (aka bird blenders) wreaking havoc on native birds.

Go up to a wind turbine and take some pics of all these dead birds and post them up will you. Way more birds would die from flying into cars or windows/buildings.

If someone waves a firearm in my general direction, I am not going to question how lethal it is or get nostalgic for the ‘good old days’. The gun in question here had been modified to look like a firearm. I think the intention of the person carrying it was clear.

And it is not OK to shoot birds with anything.

I am sorry Fabforty, my stomach disagrees with your assertion. I have hunted many ducks for food. They cook up a treat. What about our indigenous brothers and sisters who hunt birds for food. Is that OK? I do not condone the senseless slaughter of animals but for food, yes, is it ok to shoot birds so long as you are complying with the relevant laws.

Thank you dungfungus for raising this important point.

You are no doubt even more horrified by the research that shows fossil fuel plants kill at least 20x the birds that wind turbines do per gigawatt. And the hundreds of millions that die due to the conventional power station high tension power lines.

Not to mention the enormous number killed by cars.

All of which will pale into insignificance when climate change radically alters the environment both the birds and we rely on to survive.

I have been “shot” by a BB gun in my younger days. The pellet was removed like a wood splinter and there were no dramas.
More recently, I was hit with an egg thrown from a passing car full of hoons. The impact from the egg was very painful and the bruising was extensive.
There were no charges laid against the egg throwers.

No charges because they weren’t caught? Some of you are missing the point. These are illegal because they look like real firearms. Used in a robbery, the victim will think it’s a gun, pull one on police and you’ll be shot.

They were caught.
Only a fool would use a BB gun in an “armed robbery”.
That’s why sawn-off shotguns are most popular.

Only fools commit armed robberies in the first place. It’s only varying degrees of stupidity we’re talking about…

But replica/wooden guns etc are used all the time. It’s why the law doesn’t distinguish – if the victim so much as *thinks* it’s a real weapon, you can be charged with threat to cause bodily harm, regardless of whether your “weapon” can inflict actual harm or not.

A lot of fools have used replica firearms in robberies. Very few use shotguns. Most robbers ARE fools.

We all had them. These days you can get semi auto ones with a muzzle velocity of 1200fps. Enough to kill a fox.

Hoddle st was the beginning of the end.

Things have changed. I remember as a kid reading Archie comics and they had ads for BB guns.

I bought my first gun in the early 1980,s from a kid at school. This was in suburban Brisbane, he brought it to school and I bought it off him for $5.00.. A Chinese break-action .177 air rifle.

We were both around 12 and both our parents knew about the sale in advance and we proudly showed it to teachers and other students. No one cared,
