A 21-year-old man is due to face the ACT Magistrates Court today (Wednesday, 3 January 2018) on multiple charges including culpable driving after a single-vehicle accident in Hughes last night left a passenger dead, the first ACT road fatality of the year.

He is charged with culpable driving causing death, failing to stop and give assistance, disqualified driving, driving while unregistered, driving an uninsured vehicle and speeding.

Police responded about 6pm to reports that a car heading north towards the city had rolled on Yarra Glen, travelling across the centre median and coming to rest in the southbound lanes.

They found a person deceased, and the other occupants of the vehicle, a man and a woman, having fled the scene.

Police last night located the pair, who assisted police with their enquiries.

ACT Policing’s Collision Investigation and Reconstruction Team (CIRT) are examining the circumstances surrounding the incident and a report will be prepared for the Coroner.

Detective Acting Station Sergeant Marcus Boorman said police had not been pursuing the vehicle there and that police had not been involved at any time.
He said it was fortunate no other vehicles had been involved in the accident at that time of the day on a busy road.
“It is a timely reminder for all drivers to be careful when they’re driving – make the right choices, slow down and obey the road rules,” he said.

“It is a timely reminder for all drivers to be careful when they’re driving – make the right choices, slow down and obey the road rules,” he said.

Does that includes unlicensed and disqualified drivers as well?
