ACT Magistrates Court

A 25-year-old man will appear before court this morning charged with several offences relating to the alleged theft of a Mercedes C200, being under the influence of methylamphetamine and the deployment of a fire extinguisher to avoid arrest.

The charges include driving while disqualified, possess prohibited substance and fail to stop motor vehicle for police. Police will oppose bail.

About 5am on Monday a man was sleeping in his Mercedes C200 when he was approached by two males who threatened him then stole his car.

On Tuesday evening, the vehicle was repeatedly sighted in Belconnen driving in an erratic and dangerous manner. The driver/s repeatedly evaded attempts by police to stop the vehicle.

About 9.30pm last night, the vehicle was seen in a carpark in Charnwood. When police stopped the vehicle, a passenger deployed a fire extinguisher at police in an attempt to evade arrest.

When the contents of the fire extinguisher were emptied the occupants fled into nearby parkland. After a chase on foot, the driver was apprehended by police.

He was subjected to an oral fluid analysis which gave a positive indication for methylamphetamine.

The offender was arrested and charged with failing to stop for police, driving disqualified, drive motor vehicle without consent, resist arrest, drive with prescribed drug in oral fluid, and possess prohibited substance.

Enquires continue.

Police remind readers they should not report crime information via Facebook and Twitter pages.
