Manuka awash with Sushi

Manuka now has a real choice if you’re into sushi. Five sushi stores are now open and trading in the Inner south suburb. We have the iconic Mee’s which to me will always be my favourite. I highly rate the chicken schnitzel and prawn cutlet rolls!

A close second is the newly and locally created Sushi Smith who mixes it up with a large range of alternative fillings (like caesar salad) and brown and black rice options.

You then have Wasabi which really is a dinner option but does a good range of sushi for entree. Wasabi are better known for their teppanyaki.

Closing it off are the two franchises Mr Sushi and Wok me.

Out of the above who’s your favourite?

I like sushi but I think it’s become a bit like Pizza Hut in that the fillings are becoming stranger, just like pizzas with roast dinners on them. And the rolls are getting bigger. It’s no longer a quite healthy lunch due to the size and fatty fillings.

Dungfungus the trick to a healthy sushi experience is to avoid raw meat. Salted rice and seaweed shouldn’t cause you much harm if they’re appropriately fresh and kept chilled but raw meat is crawling with parasites and germs.

Vegan 10 years, frequent sushi consumer, never had a problem. 🙂

Thanks for the tip but I don’t think I will try it again – it looks too “processed” for me; sort of “fairy food”.
BTW, the meat I ingested may have been raw but I can assure you that when it was regurgitated it looked cooked. There was no sign of germs or parasites either.

Sushi Sushi in the city gets my vote. Stay away from Ace Sushi in Braddon, that place is terrible.

I have only tried sushi once and that got me “driving the porcelain bus” in the early hours of the next morning. My back teeth were awash with the stuff but at least it was painless on the return journey – glad there wasn’t a prawn head smuggled in somewhere.
I would rather have a bacon & egg roll or a Chiko any day.

I was a regular at Mee’s for many years but now frequent Mr Sushi. Broader range, prices on par with Mee’s, friendlier staff and no line up out the door (which is a regular feature at Mee’s). I am yet to try Sushi Smith.
