Not happy 🙁

We “found” a GREAT restaurant in Manuka 8 weeks ago – The Julep Lounge. It’s upstairs above Ables music.

We went there twice for a GREAT degustation menus [with wine :-}~~ ]. Both times the food was outstanding – truly. The second time we went with a couple of friends – they had the Vegetarian degustation and said it was excellent too. Not cheap admittedly – but…

Anyway – passing by today – Restaurant closed. Renovating and reopening as a Tapas bar/cocktail lounge and Jazz spot.

Also noticed that Christoph’s has also closed [in the lane facing the Old (closed) Atlantic spot] . Deep Dish – Closed.

Meh – guess it’s back to Rubicon in Griffith (Great wine list and service); Courgette and – what-ever – Just Julep lounge was so good – and walk-able <SIGH>.

on a serious note – is there a complaint that julep lounge is changing to a tapas and cocktail lounge? who here would really pefer to go to minque or b bar and put up with the nightclub thump?

I’m with you Danman, Rock Salt is the best place i have ever enjoyed fine wine and food.

I’d agree with Danman that degustation at Hawker is great. The service is frustrating, but the value and quality of the food is hard to beat.

Julep Lounge is wise to change over to tapas and high teas. While it did serve wonderful food in its restaurant, Canberra lacks a good quality tapas bar but has plenty of restaurants. Together with their cocktail bar (and bar staff who have won national awards), it will make a winning combination, It will also offer an alternative to The Hyatt for high teas (which I’ve found to be more expensive but less indulgent recently).

Was anyone at The Julep’s birthday night when they had an ice sculpture of a revolver and poured vodka down the ‘barrel’, so the vodka was chilled by the time it reached a shot glass at the end? Classy!

Chez Daniel was at one of the Northbourne hotels for a bit, wasn’t it? Had a really masterly stew there, the stock was just incredible.

There used to be a very nice family-run turkish restaurant at Manuka, upstairs in the Style Arcade, we went there a lot.

Astrojax – I feel your pain 🙂 . As for Rubicon – will try their “degustation” next time – interesting how you (I) seem to notice things like service more and more as you get older. I DO appreciate a waiter who knows and understands the menu. (Is “waiter” gender specific? hmmm? )
Cape Cod – another little gem. I do LOVE the way you can find a GREAT restaurant hidden in a local shopping centre in Canberra – Anyone remember Juniper berry before it moved from the Red Hill Shops?
Rocksalt? Heard so much about it – gotta get there….

i had christoph’s last cassoulet! yum! a sad passing, but he went to spend more time with family and may open something nearer home later on…

as for a great degustation, you can get it at rubicon, either by asking the chef, or by simply ordering five or six entrees for sharing with a glass – or three – of appropriate wines.

i’ve never much been seduced by manuka dining – i still greatly miss chez daniel, says how long ago i abandoned it!

and i second rubicon recommendations. i, also, like mezzalira. yum, and generally efficient amenable staff…

Mezzelira is a very reliable restaurant, we’ve been going there for years and it’s always good. although it’s not in Manuka.

I used to run the careers library in the same tenancy, and it’s funny when you head out to the dunnies, some of my old signs are still there (that was our storerooms and stuff).

I believe Julep (correctly), did the ‘Seinfeld-esque’ thing, and went out on a high note.
For this, I’m sure it will be remembered for some time to come.

However, what will appear in it’s place should be rather formidable, perhaps not from a culinary perspective, but definitely a venue that people who appreciate good music, cocktails and an air of sophistication can feel comfortable in.

Bring back El Rancho!

Benchmark’s degustation is great too (with fantastic wines)

Mezzalira degustation is great (with wine was excellent value for money).
Ottoman was overpriced and unsatisfying.
Cape Cod at Deakin offer a degustation occasionally – superb.

Degustation in Canberra = Rocksalt in Hawker.

Hi fives with you frog on that one.

verve sucks, bad service, poor food selection and where the hell have the couches gone?

Too far for ant to walk in her high heels.

Parking in Manuka is a piece of piss. There’s a multistory carpark under Coles. It’s 80c an hour. The bottom couple of floors are usually empty. There are escalators to the top and you end up directly across from Verve.

This is good, getting the word up on the good restaurants! Manuka is a pain in the rrse… parking is frustrating, it’s cluttered and frenetic. when I was at school we’d get a hamburger craving and pile into my ute and make it to the hamburgery opposite the church (next to the book shop, they’re all gone now) and back to school during recess. Couldn’t do that now. It’s gone to the dogs.

The Julep Lounge is very, very good with the cocktails. I’m sad the restaurant part is closing, it was very good. The owners told us the tapas menu will be expanding and the serves will be bigger. The few times I’ve ordered from it it was just as good as the restaurant meals, so I hope that continues.

I guess alcohol is where you can make really make a profit, and I wouldn’t be surprised if they’d had to go all-cocktails in order to meet Manuka rents. Or who knows, maybe they just really like making cocktails!

Faustus – I have had the degustation at Aubergine a couple of times – it is ok. BUT the service is only average – most of the waiters SEEM like they are part time working their second job etc etc. Interesting that Courgette is run by the same team BUT their service is soooo smooth :-).

O.K. Randomgit – I’ll bite 🙂
Is it scene/seen? or have I made a real boo boo?
I am a member of the APS* you know? (I know that “menus” should be menu – can’t figure out how to edit now it is posted though.)

I’ve never actually eaten at the Julip Lounge, but I’ve drank there on a number of occasions, and it was a great and classy spot for a drop of top-shelf booze. Only problem was it closed too early. If it retains its current ambiance, but fits in a few more comfy couches, I’m not going to complain. But I can’t say “Tapas bar/cocktail lounge and Jazz spot” sounds particularly promising.

For good degustation menus in Canberra, try Dijon in Civic, Aubergine in Griffith (only had a la carte, but I’d be surprised if they didn’t also offer a degustation) and Sage at Gorman House.

REALLY Tack! Cold blooded murder of the English tongue.

On the plus side…The Rubicon is FANTASTIC.

You could say Christoph’s “surrendered” to the pressure… I AM A COMEDY GOD

Christoph’s has been replaced with El Torogoz, which is a great restaurant with a good menu. Well worth a look.

I am constantly surprised that the native food restaurant next to artoven continues to be open, never seen customers.

I noticed that as well. I suspect that Manuka is having some problems, possibly with greedy landlords. For a place that’s supposed to be the upmarket shopping and dining area in Canberra, there seems to be a lot of empty shops.
