Margo Kingston and the dragway

Does Margo Kingston, of Webdiary fame live in Canberra?

Following her decision to retire from journalism, Crikey today asked her why and what’s next.

Reporter Jane Nethercote discovered that “[Ms Kingston’s] activist streak is still on form. The other night she ‘joined a local group trying to stop a dragway’.”

How many other dragways do we think are proposed in Australia right now? It’s a fair bet that it’s ours.

A bit of amateur web-dectoring tells me there are three M Kingstons registered in Canberra’s phone book — one in Hall, one in Isaacs and one in Evatt. None of which are near Majura Valley, but someone who knows the lady in question far better than I suggested she may be joining a campaign to stop something on general principles.

yeah, heard about this stupid anti-dragway group.. luckily theres an anti-anti-dragway group group. details are at http://www.canberrastreetcars.com/news/latest_news.htm

Ok, not as many Breakfast Club fans here as I’d thought. (Probably a good thing)

The correct response was – You forgot ugly, lazy and disrespectful.

(though big points for Terubo anyway)

…but otherwise, a nice enough bloke to have at a Christmas party. At Cronulla beach.

Ooh, a Piers bashing – am I too late?
Stupid, worthless, no-good, goddamn, freeloadin’ son-of-a-bitch, retarded, bigmouth, know-it-all, asshole jerk.

I think Piers is of sufficient girth to BE his own planet…

Nah, different spectrum, different planet. That is, if Piers is actually on any known planet.

She was born in Queensland: that says it all!

Only when she’s right 🙂

Oh and further to this, Tim Blair was the orginal source of this extract and Caz says it appears he edited some stuff out. Link is here.

And to answer my original question, a reader, Caz, kindly dug out this ASIC extract for me from when Margo was apprently thinking of seeling shares in Webdiary. She does live in Canberra. Lucky us.

agreed Puggy it was good enough for us as kids to see Ken Warby’s jet cars and the like and have regular meets out there, and have a outlet on the weekends . its beyond me why it cant resume out there once again.

What is wrong with a re-vamp of the site near Fairbairn. If its the wrong length then extend it. The infrastructure is there already. It existed for long enough without the people of Canberra being up in arms about it. Fix it up, give the revheads what they want and then move onto something important like health, law and order and social issues that affect all, not just Standope’s cause for the week

I’ve just been to the meeting out at the Dragway site. It is beautiful out there.
Various people spoke, including some of the local farmers/wineries etc. They will really suffer if it goes ahead in this location. A couple of dragway fans also spoke, one saying that while he supported a ddragway, he didn’t think Majura Valley was the right place to put it.
Hackett residents spoke about the noise problem already in Hackett, with the airport and Majura rd.
And a member of the govt’s secret advisory committee spoke, and said they had seen the government’s noise report, which would be of great interest to both sides of the debate, but unfortunately the government would not be making it public. (WHY NOT – OUR TAXES PAID FOR IT..)
The saga goes on.

Keating re-election

What was the winning cause in 1993?

Dragway supporters should be quite pleased, margo hasn’t backed a winning cause since 1993.

Still, it’ll be good if she makes somes friends through this.

In a PR job I had with a government agency, Margo Kingston was the only journalist on the “black balled” list for a very long time, who we were no longer to deal with under any circumstances because they just asked nutty questions then published all sorts of crap we never said. A few others came and went from that list over time, but Margo always remained on it. Vale, Margo.
