Chief Minister Gallagher has put the news online that the “vista” from the top of Mt Ainslie is to be named Marion Mahony Griffin View:

“Many believe it was Marion Griffin’s superb suite of renderings which swayed the judges to select the Griffin entry as the winning design for the new Australian national capital,” the Chief Minister said.

The drawings are, in their own right, works of art and were listed in 2003 as the ‘Walter Burley Griffin and Marion Mahony Griffin Design Drawings of the City of Canberra’ in the Australian Memory of the World Register, endorsed by UNESCO.

“Marion’s drawings, which are now on display at the National Archives of Australia in Canberra, are even the more remarkable given that neither she, nor Walter, had yet been to Australia to see the site,” the Chief Minister said.

“Their entry was completed, sight unseen, from their studio in Chicago in the USA.

“Perhaps Marion’s most spectacular drawing is the triptych ‘View From Summit of Mount Ainslie’ and so it is most fitting that this view will soon be named in Marion’s honour for all time,” the Chief Minister concluded.

The official naming of Marion Mahony Griffin View will take place later in Canberra’s Centenary year.

I hope with the naming of the lookout the government will find some money to do some upgrades.

I took my parents from Wollongong there the other day and they were appalled by the damaged lighting fixtures and bowls of dirt where gardens used to be. They said it looked very run down.

Huh? They must be confusing the lookout with another place. There have never been plantings or gardens at the lookout on Mt Ainslie. And it needs to be kept that way – minimal disruption to the nature reserve, just enough infrastructure to enable the less nimble to park and walk down to the lookout.

I saw on a map somewhere there is a “Sandra’s View” in the vcinity of the old Tralee Station.
Anyone know who “Sandra” was?
