Marist or St Edmunds?

Hi Everyone,

My family and I are moving to Canberra and would like to find out peoples opinions about Marist and St Edmunds. My son loves his sports but requires a bit more assistance academically. Ideally we would like a school that is big on their sports but also encourages academic excellence as well. In my previous experiences schools have only been interested in one or the other. I have heard of schools who offer great sporting opportunities but require a certain standard of academic results in order to participate in their sporting teams. I would appreciate peoples opinions and advice on their experiences with both Marist and St Edmunds.

Thanks

If you want your sons to have a vibrant spirit and strong character, send them to Eddies.

Eddie’s for sure people say that they push sports too much but their’s other thing like STEM’s for non-sporty people trust me I go to school their. Eddie’s has a strong academic push. Where as Grammar costs way too much and Marist costs $9,000 dollars for year 7

Marist consistently ranks within the top five highest average ATAR results for Canberra, while eddies tends to hover around the mid to lower end of the spectrum, you can’t really compare the two on that matter.
IF you truly had to compare them it would be on the sporting field and Yes when you compare the two on the rugby field they are very similarly matched, eddies usually takes the cherry in the first division match up- while marist takes it back in the second and third divisions, in soccer, cricket, basket ball, afl and most other sports… Not to mention it’s dominance of the athletics and cross country ACT events for the last 20 odd years- one could argue that all these make up for the 2nd and third placings in the first division rugby comp….
The Marist campus is by far one of the best in the Canberra region with well sized classrooms, two gymnasiums, drama theatre, 3 soccer/ rugby fields 1 dedicated rugby pitch , an afl field, and a hockey pitch, three sets of cricket nets, four tennis courts three indoor and two outdoor basketball courts, and yes a gym with more brand new equipment then your average anytime fitness!
And yes let’s not forget about boys grammar – great education – good sporting program’s and a high chance of a rather sensitive sense of smell- he will raise his nose as though there is a foul smell around… Radford are also painted with the same brush
Marist and eddies tend to churn out an “Okka” mans man style of student..

I take it you can pick which school I attended-

Nail – It would be wise to do your research before making such a statement about a school. Although St Edmunds is usually not one of the best performing schools they regularly get students who post scores in the 90’s. As a matter of fact the Dux of the 2013 got a score of 99+. So your memory can not be great if you are saying that their Dux can only manage a score in the low 80’s.

golfpro – Good for him, I’m sure he’s got a great future ahead of him. I didn’t say their Dux always scored that poorly, I said they often scored that low, and they do. Maybe you’ve had a little too much time in the sun on the course this week? get some aloe vera and lavender oil on the sun-affected areas and you’ll be fine, don’t forget to stay well hydrated in these warmer months!

What sports is your son interested in, as the schools may focus a lot more on one particular sport. I know from my own son playing against these schools, that St Eddies isn’t so great in soccer or cricket. Marist seems okay cricket wise though. Grammar spends a lot on their sporting infrastructure [new ovals and professional green kepper], but I also agree with dtc that Radford is pretty top notch.
Public schools also have sports programs, but for the academic side I can’t say a lot about any of the options above. If your son is anything like ours, being good at sports AND academia just isn’t in the mix, so perhaps a tutor might be money better spent?

This based on my personal experience going to one of these schools in recent times, as well as the experiences reported of friends at all three.

How can you say Eddies leads Marist for sport? Marist has a fully equipped gym in the Marcellin Hall which has more weights and equipment than Anytime Fitness.

Why not Radford?

It doesnt push sports as hard as say Eddies or the other schools (I dont think team sports are compulsory at Radford), but sports are certainly available through the school; and its academically ‘the best’ out of those schools being discussed. And its co-ed.

We found Marist pretty good (narrow sample of one). Dedicated staff, good facilities. They seem to have bullying as under control as it can ever be.

Pretty expensive though, relative to other schools.

Canberra schools are uniformly decent, but the only two I’d happily send my kids to are Radford and Narrabundah. If your kids are in high school and smart enough to get into higher streamed classes I’d add Telopea and Lyneham to that list. Admittedly none are particularly sporty.

If you must limit yourself to Marist or Eddies, Marist is probably the better option academically (although the poster above was slightly harsh on Eddies’ duxes. From memory they usually get between 95 and 99 or so). This is a generalisation, but be warned that these schools tend to churn out very ‘blokey’ lads. So does grammar to a lesser extent, but it’s the best sporty school academically if you can afford it.

I wouldn’t send my children to Marist, Eddies or Grammar. But if I was forced to make a choice, it would be for Marist.

Eddies is generally poor academically and is known for being hard on non-sporty kids. I know a number of people who went through the Grammars (both boys and girls) and most of them are neurotic and highly strung.

I went to St Eddies and still get info about it. Pains me to say this but St Edmunds has one of the worst academic performances of all ACT colleges.
Marist must be better.

St Eddies. But why not Grammar, which is both sporty and academic. Whatever you do, don’t send a kid to Marist – very downmarket and in a dull location.

I understand that your boy is sporty – good on him – but if you’re interested in academic performance then surely Eddies can’t be in the conversation. From memory the dux of St Edmunds normally gets a score in the low 80’s, don’t get me wrong, thats not too bad but from a proper academic school I’d expect a little better. I mean even government schools get higher scores than that! On the plus side St Edmunds is close to St Clares so he should get a well rounded social experience, maybe thats more important. Something to consider anyway. Good luck with your choice, but don’t choose Daramalan or field hockey unless you have already given up on him…

Neither. Send him to Daramalan. And teach him to play hockey.

Marist and St Edmunds (Eddies) are rival colleges in all things sport and academic and have been since 1968 since Marist College began in Canberra. Your post is therefore likely to bring out the supporters and detractors of both colleges based on where their loyalties lie.

Having said that, my son has thrived at Marist. Like your boy he is very sporty (all football codes and cricket) but needs a bit of assistance academically. Marist (Junior and Senior) has provided a great level of support academically while encouraging our son to also do his best at sport.

I can’t comment on St Edmunds college (we chose Marist over St Edmunds purely because it is closer to home).

Good luck!
