I understand that Steve Doszpot, Liberal candidate for Brindabella, who is an accomplished radio presenter, was offered a spot to fill-in on radio but knocked it back as he thought it would be a conflict of interest.

I guess Mark sees it as a free-kick for his campaign.

steve has been in the canberra region for far too long to expose himself to bad press by doing this gig.

but when will he be doing the sim challenge??

I’ve met him and he seems like a decent enough bloke. If he’d wanted to be dishonest he could have kept quiet about his candidature until the 24th of September when nominations close. (As an Independent, the Act doesn’t even recognize him as a candidate until he fronts up and pays his running fee). I think Canberrans are smart enough to sift whatever he may say on air with the knowledge that he is a candidate and will have an agenda (as if the rest of us don’t).

“..the only reason he’s doing it is to expose himself to as many people as he can to further his political aspirations…”

A cunning plan if ever there was one.

A fair point you make Mr Crowther. And yes a cunning plan indeed. I guess the point I’m trying to make is that people shouldn’t be elected on the basis of profile.

Although I wonder if you give the population too much credit for being ‘smart enough’ driving to work every morning I’ve listened to some of the people that call up radio stations and I think to myself, ‘these people all have a right to vote?’.

Best of luck to you Mr Crowther.

Three hours of free daily airtime to his electorate on 2CC doesn’t count as a gift above an Elections ACT disclosure threshold?
Even if they pay him to do it?

He’s nothing without his profile, the only reason he’s doing it is to expose himself to as many people as he can to further his political aspirations. In my opinion that’s immoral and no better than ‘cash for comment’. I reckon the powers that be at 2CC will be rubbing their grubby little paws together at the latest coup.

And it will probably work because there are stupid people out there who would vote for him just because they know who he is.

I could almost repect him as a disc-jockey but I have absolutely no time for him as a politician.

And I would have though that contractually, given he resigned his position at 106, there would be a bit of a clause that wouldn’t have allowed him to work for another radio station in Canberra for a period of time.

Unless of course he was boned, which we all know is the case. And if someone was boned I would certainly like to know why before I voted for them.

Quoting from Parton Words:

The people at 2CC are well aware that I’ve done 10 years of it in Adelaide so they asked if I would be able to fill in for Welshy today and tomorrow afternoon. I had to check it out with the Australian Electoral Commission, but they were A O K with it. We put in a disclaimer at the start of each hour declaring that I am intending contesting the election as an independent and that we would wherever possible steer away from discussing election issues.

It feels wrong, but deep down I don’t care.

Nominations for the ACT election don’t open for another week – technically Parton is not a candidate and therefore can do whatever he wants.

Also, I believe the station is organising a disclaimer to be run during the day.

This is the guy who did the absolutely stupid voice overs at Brumbies and Kangaroos games?

I am sorry it seems this place is his fan club and 2CC’s, however he says the most stupid obvious things at those games, I think it would be better if he was allergic to microphones.

@HA:

oh, come on. when a guy needs money, and is recently unemployed, regardless of his political status in the upcoming election, I say, let the man earn some quids.

or would you prefer that we paid for him via centrelink?

When did the RiotACT become an outpost of samuelgordonstewart.com?

I meant Mike Welshe rather than Walshe. And not sure if that’s with two “e”s or one.

I dunno. Walshie sounds as partisan as any commentator you ever come across on radio, so it won’t be hard for Mark to sound more balanced than him. Given that Mark has a self-interest in the ACT election I suspect he would be much more circumspect or at least honest about the lines of argument he pushes. People know where Mark stands now, so it will be interesting to see how he navigates his way on radio wearing two hats.

The worst thing on radio is a commentator like Mike Walshe who claims he is “middle of the road”, but ruthlessly pushes a barrow in one direction only. In his case he’s a Labor man. But there are lots of examples the other way. The problem is that these characters never have the courage to run for office and seldom have the candour to admit they will only see one side of the story. And they are sometimes silently jealous of those who do have the backbone to argue a position and propose solutions, which makes them all the more vehement when they snipe from the sidelines.

Nothing against Mark, but as a candidate in the upcoming election, this is totally improper. It is not what our airwaves (privately owned or otherwise) are for. Sorry but Welshy on holiday or not, Mark should not be on air while he is contesting a seat in the Assembly. Unless of course he declares his conflict of interest every time he opens his mouth and/or passes an opinion. Highly unlikely and terrible radio.
