Mark Webber bowing out

As is our wont we’ll claim Queanbeyan when it suits us.

The Age has the sad news that there won’t be a local tearing up the track in Formula 1 racing next year:

Mark Webber will quit formula one at the end of the season to lead Porsche’s return to international sports car racing next year.

After weeks of speculation about Webber’s future, it was confirmed on Thursday evening that he has signed a multi-year deal with Porsche that will end his 11-year career in F1.

He decided against renewing for an eighth season in 2014 with the pacesetting Red Bull Racing Team after relations with his triple world champion teammate Sebastian Vettel sank to a new low earlier this year.

I’m sorry but Porsche actually winning Le Mans is more like 5-7 years away – if at all. Nobody can match the kind of dev dollars Audi throws at that race alone. Toyota is still a way off but I give them maybe 3-4 more years. Also consider that in the WEC Porsche will always be second best to Audi under the Volkswagen group. Can’t have the younger sibling beating the flagship brand now can we?

3 seasons will see them challenging for the front.
First season is having a go, collecting data
Second season is racing for a podium
Third is racing for the top step

Quite.

A shared Audi/Porsche podium will be nice to see.

It’s true the relationship between Audi and Porsche under VW ownership will be interesting to watch in WEC, but Porsche doesn’t do second best and they wouldn’t be coming back if they are expected to play second fiddle to Audi.

My tip is the best year’s of Webber’s career are still ahead of him. My second tip is I expect Porsche will surprise you.

I agree with Webber’s career. The longer, more patient races will suit him. You’re speaking to a die hard Audi fan here…. So we’ll see. Porsche does have the advantage of specifically building for the 2014 regulations though, I’ll give you that one.

So with 12 races to go will we see a “Vettelesque” approach to ‘team orders’ from Mark? It could be fun if Vettel needs to pass…..

Horner on the pit wall “Mark Multi 12”
Webber “Tell that little shithead paybacks are a bitch”
Horner “Multi 12 mark, multi 12”
Webber “la la la can’t hear you”

I certainly hope so. Webber has nothing to lose and I’d love to see him stick it to them.

Ha!

On the upside, less absurdly late nights.

I expect local coverage of the WEC might improve a bit from 2014, which will probably mean longer late nights with the number of 6 Hour races on the schedule.

Crap – I didn’t think that through did I? 🙂

Going to Porsche will be a great way to end his career though. And if he wins Le Mans in the next year or three that will make for some nice local content.

Re locals in F1, I suppose WA is really a bit too far to be claiming Daniel Ricciardo as a RiotACT local. 😛

and I say good on him, he really has been given the raw deal as the number 2 compared to golden boy Vettel… He went from a team that didn’t really know how to built F1 cars, to a team that was simply looking for a bum in seat approach so they could say they had two drivers.

He deserves much better and hopefully he’ll get that from Porsche…

glad he is going, at the end of the day it would have been him or Vettel/Helmut Marko heading out the door and the latter was never going to happen

Webber has done us proud over the years considering he had to put up with the much younger and marginally faster spoilt brat Vettel.

Gutted. Despise Vettel, and now he’ll have it rather to himself. It’s like Schumacher the younger reincarnated. And at the same time that V8 Supercars has become quite irrelevant and hardly worth watching too…

On the upside, less absurdly late nights.

Oh, as for the quote about “weeks of speculation”, yeah try 52 weeks. 😉
