Queanbeyan City Council has managed to secure Mark Webber during his busy lead-in to the Australian Grand Prix for a civic reception this coming Monday (22 March).

A motorcade will travel down Crawford Street at 12:30pm before a reception is held at Council Chambers. Queanbeyan Mayor Cr Tim Overall has invited the public to come along to support Mark and says, “Queanbeyan is proud of all of its sporting stars and is honoured to have such high-quality sports people representing it on all levels.

“The people of Queanbeyan have followed Mark’s career closely and the town celebrated as one when he crossed the finish line in Germany to record his first Grand Prix victory.”

Hingo, yes.

I went and it was fantastic. Mark is a top bloke. Happy to sign autographs and take photos.

Davo you’ll be pleased to know that Stanhope sent his apologies and didn’t attend today’s function. It was a pretty low key and humble affir today. Much like Webber himself really, he spoke really well and as corny as it is to say, we can be proud to call him an Aussie.

A few pics sent off to RA, and hopefully they’ll be added soon.

Um, well… Good on struggletown for honouring their own, just don’t let Standope have anything to do with it, or before we know it there will be another statue/art work adorning Canberra.

What proof do you need? You want him to knock on your door?

Funny that you should be demanding proof of… something (I haven’t quite worked out what yet) after your bizarre little conspiratorial outburst in #9.

Hingo, proof? [crickets]

Or is he just visiting dad and signing autographs?

Ha ha, do you think his motorcade will break down before it gets off of the grid?

Rubens will inexplicably have decided to visit Quangers.

Webber. How often does he come home these days? [crickets]

If he does not call Queanbeyan home, then he does not deserve to be recognised.

Oh wait, it is a photo OP for the Labourites. [smacks himself on the forehead] Well OK then lets do it.

What an idiotic comment. Yes, he does call Queanbeyan home. He lives in England because F1 is mostly a European sport and he lives close to his employer. As mentioned by 2604, he travels back when he can. Don’t let the facts sway your argument though, you have some nice tall poppy syndrome going on there.

He’s done very well to actually get there better then most on the F1 grid. Because the majority get a start because they are backed by wealthy family and huge sponsorship. I believe Mark had none of that and just go there on talent and hard work alone.

Like every other F1 driver, Webber lives in Europe. He gets back to Queanbeyan at least twice a year, once in the F1 off-season and again during the fortnight leading up to the Australian GP – which is not bad given the demands on F1 drivers’ time from training, sponsors, and testing.

As for your second sentence, last time I checked there weren’t that many opportunities for Formula 1 drivers looking to make a living in Queanbeyan.

Didn’t you know : they’re all “independents” on council?

The fact that Webber’s partner is an older woman does credit both to him and to her.

As a world – conquering sportsman who presumably is surrounded by available bimbos (Bingles?), the fact that he remains in a long term relationship with a ‘normal’ woman is a mark of his character and of her quality.

My earlier post got moderated also. I’ll leave it at saying the first response to this story is very poor form.

Certain I saw a less diplomatic post a bit earlier in the afternoon…

Indeed you did, I was a bit gobsmacked it got pulled tbh. It was very tame and attacked the content of the post, not the person making it. Anyway…

He should drive his car down the street

Certain I saw a less diplomatic post a bit earlier in the afternoon. Seems you can slander anyone, as long as they’re not a (very cantankerous, long time) RA contributor.

The joints goin’ to the dogs, I say, the bloody dogs.

Will he be bringing his grandmother….sorry, partner with him?

I’d like to hear you explain why you think this idiotic comment was necessary.

Is a statue on the cards???

vg said :

OK, winning an F1 race is a reasonably big deal but to say that Qbn rose as one is total bollocks. Half the geniuses there wouldn’t know who Mark Webber is.

Will he be bringing his grandmother….sorry, partner with him?

Oh Dear………………

I’ll be there. The guy deserves recognition because for an Aussie to get into F1 it is bloody difficult in the first place, but to win races is outstanding.

troll-sniffer2:09 pm 19 Mar 10

How can Queanbeyan host a civic reception? Civic is in Canberra, not over the border. Sheesh no wonder it’s called Struggletown if they can’t even read a map.
