MarketPlace Fresh, which operates 14 stores across Victoria, is making the move interstate, and their first expansion is into Westfield Woden. They’re scheduled to throw open the doors at the end of April.

CEO of MarketPlace Fresh Stephen Fanous said that the 45-year-old business specialises in locally sourced fresh produce.

“We’ve recognised that Canberra is a good diverse market that we believe is underserviced, especially in regards to what we have to offer which is a quality, wide range of fresh produce,” Mr Fanous said.

“We’re big on sourcing locally as much as possible, so we are very much across the network of growers in the region.

“It’s our first interstate store and we have a good partnership with Westfield and we feel like we will really add to the Canberra community.”

Mr Fanous said that MarketPlace Fresh is a family run business that works closely with hundreds of market-leading growers and producers to bring the best quality produce straight from harvest to our customers. He believes the markets offer “varieties you can’t find anywhere else”, from heirloom onions and tomatoes to giant blueberries and exotic fruits like sapodilla.

The business was the idea of the late Arthur Kneebone, who began as a vegetable grower and then moved into retail. Over the years, building on the work of Arthur, the organisation has developed a strong network of growers across the country.

Mr Fanous declared that the company is eager to emulate their Victorian success in Woden and is “actively looking” for employees to assist with their launch and beyond.

“We’re all committed to what we do. We’re grower direct, which is a big plus for our business and we will be able to bring different produce to Canberra that they haven’t had before,” he said.

There will be further information on a more concrete opening date available soon. When opened, the store will be near the Woolworths within the centre.
