Falls

MartyO sent us some more of his fantastic work for you all to enjoy.

Cheers Martin!

Gibraltar Falls is upstream from Woods Reserve – I tried with my daughter to reach the bottom of the falls earlier this year but was stopped by screaming (daugher) and a snake sunning itself on a rock – we did not make it to the bottom of the falls!

This time we started from the top car park and found very steep path winding down to the bottom – these are the results of some long exposures and an ND400 filter slowing the exposure down 400 times. Allowing for 30 second long exposures in daylight.

Check out Martin Ollman’s Flickr account to see the full size photos plus his other work.

The second two are really nice, but the first one is way underexposed. Easy to do because the water is much brighter, but also easily corrected.

I think Martyo used a neutral density filter on these….

What makes you say that?

I’d say that you’d need a substantial neutral density filter in order to get a 30 second exposure at f13 and ISO 100.

Makes me want to get a few ND filters. 🙂

A neutral density filter? In order to get a 30 second exposure? At f13?? And ISO100??!!!! That’s crazy talk, right there. The RiotACT has sunk to new lows on this thread. I call shenanigans, and invoke Godwins Law! A picture, or it didn’t happen, dammit!!! Oh, wait….

So you made it across the private farmland without the landowner firing his muskets at you?

Are you confusing Gibraltar falls with Gininderra Falls?

Thanks Martyo, did you use a neutral density filter?

Yes, he used a ND filter.

OP mentions in his text that he used an ND400 filter. These are v good. I tend to take a variable ND filter with me. MartyO may have some comment on IQ degradation as a result of these variable ND filters, but I generally find them sound. BTW, you should PM MartyO to get his flickr handle and follow him. His work is consistently excellent.

The flowing water looks like it transforms into a cloud floating on the still water. There has to be some sort of supernatural creature living in there!

You are very clever.

Methinks that you are confusing Ginninderra Falls

Great artistic spirit Mr O. Well done. 🙂

I’ve been to the falls with my wife and kids many times. It’s a beautiful place, so thanks for sharing your own vision of it with us.

Spectacular.

Thanks Martyo, did you use a neutral density filter?

How long were the exposures?

Cheers 🙂

Nikon D600
Exposure 30
Aperture f/13.0
Focal Length 17 mm
ISO Speed 100

How long were the exposures?

beautiful work!!

We had done the walk from Woods Reserve to Gibraltar falls years ago and it was quite pleasant even with young kids.

Earlier this year we took 4 kids (ages from 5 to 17) from Gibraltar Falls to Woods reserve and it was quite challenging.

Apparently that track hasn’t been reopened after the fires and floods so isn’t being maintained. Even the bit from the top of the falls down to the bottom isn’t as obvious and easy as it used to be.

On the plus side, the new observation platform while ugly is quite functional and easy to access.
