Massive retail expansion for Kingston and Dickson

Dickson plan

With major redevelopment in Civic now finalising something’s going to need to be done to keep the concrete pumpers rolling in Canberra.

Fortunately Andrew Barr has leapt into action announcing draft master plans for Dickson and Kingston:

To ensure Dickson and Kingston continue to develop sustainably and that these communities have better access to supermarkets, retail, transport, housing and parking, I urge all members of the community to have a look at these planning documents and have their say.

The Dickson report proposes conditions being placed on the development of a new supermarket including that a new multi-story car park be built with retail space at the bottom before a new supermarket is built.

Both reports are available for public comment until 24 September.

Intriguingly the Kingston master plan is in formal portrait format while the Dickson one is hipster landscape.

I’m not entirely sure what that means.

also the statement that you need to place supermarkets away from parking in order to drive traffic past speciality stores is a worry.

That is a worry.

CT today says tht Kingston will have more retail space than the Canberra Centre. Wierd.

And didn’t I read somewhere that the Brand Depot building was designed for use as a freight depot should Snowtown get the nod for 24/7 freight flights?

didn’t dfo just go belly up? but agree, less retail, more amenity…

If Dickson Shops lose their character it will be a great shame. Cheaper parking than the city has been a great plus. I bet Civic retailers have been bellyaching about the competition …

More retail expansion? wtf? I thought retailers were in deep shit these days.

How many more vacant and empty shops do we need around the place?

Okay, so Stanhope announces a major consultation process with ALL of Canberra about where we want the city to go, and Barr simultaneously tells us the answer.

I’m all for improving the parking situation in Canberra through multi-story parking, and dickson could probably do with another supermarket but in all seriousness – doesn’t Canberra have enough retail at this point?

We’ve relatively recently had the Canberra center expansion and Belconnen mall is presently doing the same thing. Furthermore, while DFO is doing alright, Brand Depot is a ghost town.

I really find it difficult to believe that Canberra can support much more retail.
This isn’t entirely specific to this development – for the past couple of years there’s been expansion on expansion of retail space in Canberra, surely it’s going to reach saturation, if it hasn’t already.

Brand depot was built was a spolier to DFO, so forget about that place.

i hope they don’t lose what is good about dickson – available parking, outdoor eating, china town.

the draft plan seems quite vague to me -anyone find any detail in it?

also the statement that you need to place supermarkets away from parking in order to drive traffic past speciality stores is a worry. that’s the end of dickson shopping for mums with small kids and slower old people.
