Master plan priority for Oaks Estate, Weston, Athllon Drive and Belconnen town centre

Andrew Barr has posted online a lengthy speech to the Assembly on where the Master Plan process is up to.

Of particular interest is that in 2011-12 the priority list is:

    — Oaks Estate, which is already committed and some work is being undertaken in the preparation of the master plan
    — Weston – Cooleman Court group centre
    — Athllon Drive – a major transport corridor; and
    — part of the Belconnen town centre as part of the renewal process

Woden was one of the first Town centre’s to receive a masterplan which started in 2001, and completed in 2004 .http://www.actpla.act.gov.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0016/2581/wtc-masterplan2004.pdf
Pity that the ACT Government never gazetted the plan which had restrictions on height limits, and traffic calming of Melrose drive.

As one of the community representatives working on the Woden Master Plan, I can say that Corbell and ACTPLA acted completely dishonourably through the consultative process. Even while we were working on apsects of the Master Plan, ACTPLA was secretly but actively involved in the planning of the ugly tower and the destruction of Guardian House. Neither of these things were ever brought to the table, and were in contravention of the final MP (which was never approved anyway).

What Corbell did then was open up all the development opportunities embodied in the MP, and ignored anything else that had a positive community impact.

The whole approach of the government and ACTPLA was deceitful, secretive and devious in the way in which they manipulated the consultation process.

Nothing has changed – Katie is as bad as Stanhope ever was, and Corbell is back as planning minister.

So anyone seeking to be engaged in the MP process should be prepared for further dishonesty.

Also seems he has news on

I guess he is not interested in Belconnen

Understandable, he’s now in tune with the rest of Canberra. Not interested in Belco

Not surprising. Belco is full of rusted-on Labor supporters who saved Katy from defeat, returning 3 Labor members in the election. If they had voted the same way as Tuggers (or even if they had elected Chic Henry) we would now have the government and chief minister the majority of Canberrans voted for.

So if people had voted differently the election results would have changed? Deep..

I’d say it’s actually due to the fact that this is his electorate website as an MLA for Molonglo, as opposed to as a Minister, and the electorate of Molonglo includes all of the places on that list but not Belconnen or Tuggeranong.

So yeah, as an MLA for Molonglo (as opposed to as a Minister) he is not interested in Belconnen. Admittedly it looks a little odd when the website also lists his ministerial roles.

Playing the pedant… correction here is in order. Oaks Estate is been subjected to a ‘third attempt’ by government to develop a masterplan.

The word ‘priority’is a misnomer…Is 25 years a reasonable time frame here?

I thought the ACT government’s long term plan for Oaks Estate was to put all their public housing there and then not provide any public transport services so the residents can’t get back to Canberra and become Queanbeyan’s problem.

Well – Queanbeyan sends us its sewage…

And they got that horrible yellow building. Best not to have a masterplan, maybe.

They’re going to turn Oaks Estate into a townhouse-ery? Or sell it back to Qbn.

If RiotACT had a *like* button id’ve have pressed it for this comment. Best idea ever.

It sounds as if Andrew Barr has hired Sir Humphrey Appleby as his speech writer.

Anyone know if/when Woden will get a master plan? Having just moved to the Southside for the first time I just can’t get over how depressing and stark Woden Town Centre is.

‘Athllon Drive – a major transport corridor’ sounds ominous.

With statements like “The proposed process, which would produce a Precinct Code, would mean that those development proposals that are in accordance with the relevant Precinct Code could be assessed in the Development Application Code track.” [excert from link above], it’s no wonder the LDA can get away with anything. I can’t make heads or tails of this kind of mumbo jumbo and the speech is full of it. This is what politicians are good at, hiding the facts in a maze of gobbledygook, so no layman will have any objections to the intellectuals that pull the intricately worded strings.
