Current.com.au has the news that, as predicted, Woolworths new hardware chain “Masters” is going to open at Majura Park next to Costco:

While many details of the new retailer are still under wraps, Woolworths community relations manager Simon Berger said the home improvement store would offer consumers a diverse range of quality products for their homes, including appliances.

“We are maintaining an element of surprise, but are confident Masters will raise the bar when it comes to range, value, service and shopping experience,” said Berger.

“Masters will provide competition and offer more choice for local people who take pride in maintaining and improving their homes.

“With around 35,000 products, Masters will focus on home improvement, not just hardware. For example, customers will be able to get what they need to renovate their kitchen, along with appliances for the kitchen.

“Our team of around 150 will have extensive training to bring a new level of service, in a nicer shopping environment”, said Mr Berger.

I have a 100 mbps down speed so shouldn’t have a problem.

That 100 millibits per second isn’t the holy grail it once was … maybe consider upgrading to, say, dial-up.

Bought some 3 m long cement sheets at Masters – not available anywhere else, and price reasonable. They were delivered on a robust pallet. Some businesses want the pallets back, so I asked if they wanted it back. Apparently not, the fellow said I could burn it (joking mate).

A problem with Masters is you can not e-mail or even call the local store. You have to call Sydney 1300 number and get them to transfer you after going through the automated choice thing – such a pain.
They direct you to their web page which is very slow coming up and doesn’t work when it is finally up. I have a 100 mbps down speed so shouldn’t have a problem.
The people in Sydney tell you Airport has one in stock, and when you get there you find it is the display model which they can not sell – the way of the future.

The store location is poor and not too much different from Bunnings so can’t see why people would go there; although, I see good numbers. The Big W is even crazier – how is that going to work?

Given Bunnings is about 2km from my house they’d have to be offering something pretty damn good to have me drive out there.

people having a sook about service at Bunnings obviously haven’t shopped at Magnet Mart recently. I drive past Magnet Mart – 5 minutes from my house to go to Bunnings, 20 minutes away.

I shopped at both today (Fysh and Qbn). Bunnings I was able to get my stuff and wander out pretty quickly. Magnet Mart had 3 customers, 2 checkout operators, and a queue. Then again, they always have a queue.

Masters? As in, Jack Of All Trades and Master of None? What a strange branding decision.

My prediction is that the 13,000 future development will be a Masters store, another Woolworths LTD business. You heard it here first people

…close but not cigar…..http://the-riotact.com/brand-depot-all-closed-up/48885 lol by 2 days my friend…..:)

To be accurate you did say Masters was taking over the Brand Depot site. I was pointing out they were taking over the future development behind the petrol station. Wait and see 😉

@EvanJames I think you will find that Masters will go in the area that is being developed north of the Petrol Station.

I dare say a deal was done with Woolies to secure all this space for all their brands. That leads me to my new prediction, Dan Murphys to replace Supabarn once they leave.

Ah, yes, they have been digging and putting in piers there, north of McDonalds. Wondered what they were up to.

The Jim Murphys that is battling on is a great shop, I’d be sad to see them seen off, but there’s never anyone in there. I’ve heard 3 Seeds is struggling too. SupaBarn quietly left, I’m not even sure when, but they’re gone. Even picked their foam logos off the front. A shame, when it was going properly it was a fantastic supermarket.

I’m eternally amazed that people taking up leases at the airport don’t get clauses in their leases preventing Snow from issuing leases to similar businesses within a certain radius.

Well their service couldn’t be any worse than Bunnings.

What’s the reasoning behind your derogatory comment?

My guess – prior crap service.

Your experience at Bunnings Fyshwick is the opposite of what I always found out there. They had ignoring the customer down to a fine art.

I dunno, if you want to do anything more interesting than building a deck the belco bunnings people’s eyes kind of glass over before they ask if, in fact, you’d like to build a deck after all.

I’m sure the Masters team of ‘around 150’ will be very highly skilled. Not sure where they will find them from – perhaps further reduce the staff in other woolies shops.

So as the full name is ‘Masters Home Improvement’ should it properly be Master’s Home Improvement, Masters’ Home Improvement or just plain apostrophe free Masters Home Improvement?

Interesting. The sign out on the road says Woolworths Big W Dick Smith coming next easter! (wow, so soon, not). The Airport put out a propaganda sheet showing a floorplan of the old brand depot with these three in it, and another 40 “speciality shops”. The re-badged Magnet Mart was the first rumour about what was going in to brand depot… Interesting shennanigans. Maybe they’re going to nix the woolworths adn put the hardware place in there?

What’s the reasoning behind your derogatory comment? I regularly hop out to the Fyshwick store and apart from a couple of the tradesmen’s desk staff, everyone is very helpful, and often there appear to be more than enough staff to help and advise. Sometimes you have to go and find a sales person but heck, would you expect a butler to follow you around or something?

I don’t think I’ll bother shopping at a place named after a football coach and a journalist who wrote a book about Alan Jones.

So it will be known as Woollies Depot?
At least it will be the end of that damned Brand Depot earbug song on the ad.

“We are maintaining an element of surprise, but are confident Masters will raise the bar when it comes to range, value, service and shopping experience,” said Berger.

Well their service couldn’t be any worse than Bunnings.

I wonder if they are going to re-badge all the Magnet Marts as ‘Masters’?
