Liberal election candidate Matt Watts is letting it be known he’s swept to power at the Belconnen Community Council and presumable can hereafter be referred to as Mr President:

Mr Watts is a candidate in the upcoming ACT Legislative Election and, as per the Belconnen Community Council Constitution, this was declared prior to the vote. Mr Watts committed to serving only one term as President. Mr Watts was previously the Secretary of the Belconnen Community Council, and also a Committee member until work temporarily took him out of Canberra.

“My focus will be on refreshing the Belconnen Community Council’s Constitution and establishing a number of standing orders for the more effective management of meetings and improved clarity surrounding our obligations under the Associations Incorporation Act 1991. Any proposed changes will be subject to agreement by the Belconnen Community Council Executive.”

I hope the “refreshing” of the Council’s constitution as proposed by Watts includes suitable amendments to prevent the Liberal Party, any other political party, a commercial interest organisation, radical religious sect or similar from hijacking and exploiting this apolitical community organisation ever again.

This was tantamount to a takeover of the Belconnen Community Council by the Liberal Party. Matt had effectively “stacked the meeting” with people who did not routinely attend council meetings and will probably never been seen again. What is this all about?
