About 12.30am, a 16-year-old and 18-year-old male, were eating on the lake side section of the McDonalds restaurant when they were approached by a group of up to eight (8) males, aged between 18 to 20 years and of Indigenous and Caucasian appearance.

The victims were harassed and as the 16-year-old got up to leave, the 18-year-old was struck on the head with a glass bottle.

Both victims fled the scene, escaping with minor injuries. A backpack was stolen from them, prior to fleeing.

Are you employed by todaytonight by any chance?

Nope. I’ve never watched that crap in my life.

But what with home invasions, bombings, the cops smoking two armed men and gangs of loonies mugging people all over the place, this suddenly doesn’t seem like the Canberra I grew up in.

Have you been personally affected in any way by these things you have mentioned?

Hells bells! I was there exactly 24 hours earlier, enjoying a McChino with a mate and taking snaps of the pristine blue-green waters!!! Other than tards “cruising'”, and seeing how big a burn-out they could manage in drive thru, we didn’t see a soul – thank god!

I bet it’ll be a while before the 16 yo is allowed out on the town at that time…

At that time, Maccas drive through is open, but the restaurant is not. Though it is easy enough to park in the drive next door on the way out and take a walk to enjoy the views (should no group of thugs be present).

So this place is open after midnight and there are no cameras that managed to catch any of this? All we get is the usual suspect description

From the sound of it, they were outside the store down closer towards the lake. Even the cameras outside the store wouldn’t have caught it, especially as it was dark.

working in retail, most cameras are pointed at the tills.

Is it just me, or are there more of these brazen, unprovoked public assaults happening now than there used to be?

I bet there’s more to it than what was told to the police at the incident.

well, according to the stolen bike responses, eating at 12.30 at night outside means you just have to expect to be subject to a criminal activity

I hope this is just a single incident rather than a pattern of rising crime, as LSWCHP is suggesting.

Looking back at recent RiotAct postings, there’s been a home invasion and two serious muggings in the last few days. About a month ago, a woman and her friend were assaulted without provocation while having lunch at a restaurant down in Tuggeranong and she was seriously injured. Etc etc…

I’ve lived in Canberra most of my life, and the term “home invasion” has always been some something I associate with “gangstas” and “rappers” and South Central LA, not Giralang or Palmerston.

This McDonalds thing seems like the act of crazy people. The presence of marauding packs of savages in our midst who appear to have no regard for others and no fear of consequences worries the hell out of me.

It’s not like they’re robbing Fort Knox, either. They’re prepared to do this for a few dollars cash, a phone, an iPod etc. Or perhaps because they gain sadistic pleasure from terrorising and injuring people.

I’m starting to become concerned about the safety of myself and my family.

I hope this is just a single incident rather than a pattern of rising crime, as LSWCHP is suggesting.

Is it just me, or are there more of these brazen, unprovoked public assaults happening now than there used to be? Drunken brawls in Civic is one thing, but I find it incredible that two people could be mugged by a gang of 8 hoodlums while chomping a burger under the golden arches.

Shit happens, as Mr Abbott likes to say, but I don’t recall this kind of shit happening here until recently.

maybe if the ACT Gov had a speed camera there, none of this wouldn’t have happened
