Mighty Angus Meal

While the sub $10 lunch review series has been exploring the weird and the wonderful options arounds Civic today we thought we’d add a control.

And so I walked into the James Court maccas at noon today to buy the Mighty Angus large meal for $9.90 (which includes drink and fries).

If you’ve been confused by the fast food chains all selling branded Angus beef and wondered where all the extra herds of Angus cows came from there’s a simple answer.

Angus cattle was always the primary source of beef in Australia, it just got rebranded.

But the Mighty Angus burger is actually pretty good as these things go.

A big thick oval patty, cheese, bacon, sour cream, red onion, and a chutney.

I know it’s fashionable to hate on Ronald these days, but while this is not a healthy meal it is undoubtedly tasty.

And while McDonalds service has generally been slipping for years in Australia today James Court was actually working really well. Polite english as a first language service and the meal delivered quickly and efficiently.

(For more sub $10 lunches in Civic check the tag, if you’ve got recommendations let me know.)

Can’t wait to find out how this new concoction stacks up against the mighty Double Whopper meal for the same price.

I don’t know why people hack on McDonalds so much.

It recharges their smug batteries.

Yeah! Where the bread lasts forever, and your eating this yuk!

Do the health inspectors normally give notice?

AFAIK yes, it seems the government way for most inspections. However if there are any issues, the follow ups are unannounced.

It was adults in charge who absolutely exploited the fact that none of us kids knew our rights in the workplace.

I am in no way affiliated with MD, however i do have friends who work their as both managers + general workers.
It not an exciting job, but it provides the workforce with a lot of jobs, and takes on kids with little to no experience. These days you get brochures and training about your rights in the workplace, as well as a chain of command of conflict resolution (obviously they have their own lingo for it)
I used to agree with you that MDs is a dump full of overpowering managers, but provided you’re doing your job efficiently, their isn’t an issue. Obviously, in hiring many people they get the occasional bad apples that aren’t motivated to work, but they cut those ties pretty quick. If someone disagrees with this, feel free to correct me 🙂

Aparently if you are a manager, asst. manager, shift manager etc they pay actualy pretty well considering.

As far as i’ve seen, your pay “exponentially” increases the longer you’ve been there (rather than linearly).

Interesting anecdote from a colleague of mine: she lives in the James Court apartments and a few weeks ago was woken in the middle of the night (3 am) by an almighty racket at MacDonalds. It turned out that they knew that the health inspectors were coming at 7 am so Mackers paid to have the place cleaned from top to bottom during the night, including using noisy machinery to clean out disgusting drains etc. Do the health inspectors normally give notice? Or would it have been some corrupt tipoff?

Maccas have contracted outside cleaners come in every night to clean the place out, on top of the normal staff. Can’t comment on the machinery. The inspectors were no doubt McD’s own internal inspectors who pop by from time to time and do an incredibly comprehensive inspection every year or so.

I only have maccas 4 or 5 times a year – but had the Legend Chicken Burger the other day. It was pretty good – and was also the first time ever that the burger and fries were too hot to eat immediately.

But as you mentioned JB, I do wonder what happened to McDonalds generally? To partly answer my own question – I did my time there 20 years ago as a clueless kid and it was by far the strictest job I’ve ever had. Would get harshly reviewed and threatened almost every shift and even called in outside of shifts to basically commit to working harder. It was adults in charge who absolutely exploited the fact that none of us kids knew our rights in the workplace.

These days the managers are barely older than their staff and it’s seen as one of the worst jobs you can have – clearly beneath most teenagers. A while back the person serving me stopped halfway through my order to pull their phone out, turn their back and answer a SMS!

For cheap, easy and consistent food McD’s can’t be beat. It’s not an every day food, sure, but really not as bad as the popular crowd would make it out to be.

I like the McChicken burger myself.

I don’t know why people hack on McDonalds so much.
I had one of these Grand Angus burgers last week and it was pretty good.
It’s not gourmet food, but it’s not meant to be.
I compare this attitude with the amount of people that went crazy about a red caravan who managed to put some real cheese and fancy lettuce on a burger and charge $15. It doesn’t make sense.

The angus marketing thing came from the US, I think, as you see it everywhere. The McDonalds/Burger King stuff, and also restaurants and steak houses. Maybe Angus wasn’t their main beef but it’s certainly our main beef here. Although for years it was Herefords.

I try to avoid all Americanized fast food chains (surprisingly, there seem to be greater McDonalds/KFC density in Australia than I saw in the three years I lived and worked in the US).

As EvanJames said, “Angus” is certainly an american marketing strategy. Certified Angus Beef (CAB) is a specification-based, branded-beef program which was founded in 1978 by US Angus cattle producers to increase demand for their breed of cattle. Angus is now preferred because they mature extremely early, have a high carcass yield and higher intramuscular fat (“marbling”). Intensive farming feed lots prefer them – you can pack ’em in, feed ’em up (on crap they wouldn’t eat normally) and turn ’em into hamburger patties for McDonalds cheaper, easier and faster than “free range” grass-fed cattle.

I don’t like many fast food joints such as Hungry Fats and whatnot, but I have quite a fondness for Micky D’s. Those Angus Burgers are nice, but I like the good old Big Mac. Always need an extra long gym session after though
