The ABC is running a story confirming that the long anticipated pre-selection challenge to the ALP Member for Fraser, Bob McMullan, is going ahead. Bob isn’t making the same sort of song and dance about it that Simon Crean did.

“I have to say it’s nothing like what is going on in Victoria, I know the gentleman concerned and he will not be engaged in any of the sorts of activities we have seen in Victoria,”

areaman, there is one person at the moment widely known as stating their intent to challenge. That person clearly does not stand a chance. However call for nominations has not happened yet, and anything could happen between now and call for nominations (Such as one of the factions deciding they’d like one of their candidates to have the preselection).

With a statement like: “There is nothing unhealthy or unsavoury going on; it’s a legitimate, if for me unfortunate but legitimate, exercise of rank and file rights” from Mr McMullan, it’s easy to see just how much of an offense it seems to him when someone grows a set and mounts him for a challenge…

Yeah, but as Bob points out, unlike in Victoria it has amost no chance of success. The thing about the ALP is that any old fruitcake can nominate for preselection (as has happned hear), that doesn’t mean that they’ll get up.
