ACT Policing is seeking witnesses to an incident at the Florey shops last night (December 22) after two Dominos staff members were assaulted by a group of young people.

Around 10.30pm, two male youths entered the Dominos Pizza store at the Florey shops and stole food and soft drink. Two staff members from Dominos located the two youths and a group of young people near the Florey oval, a short distance away from the shops. The group was eating the food that had been taken from Dominos and agreed to return to the shop to pay for the items.

The group of youths followed the two Dominos staff members to the rear of the Dominos Pizza shop, but as they approached the rear door, the group have forced the two staff members to the ground and repeatedly kicked and punched them. The group of youths fled the area towards Krefft Street.

ACT Ambulance Service attended the Florey shops and treated the two staff members for cuts and abrasions.

The group of about 10 youths is described as being aged between 13 and 16 years.

Anyone who was at the Florey shops around 10.30pm on Thursday evening and witnessed the assault, or may be able to assist police with the investigation, is asked to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or via the Crime Stoppers website on www.act.crimestoppers.com.au. Information can be provided anonymously.

I assume in such cases that the footage and/or a photofit would be released to the public but that any information resulting from such would be kept confidential.

Apparently they are not allowed to release or show images (perhaps because perps are under18?)…

What an utter joke.

So what happens if say… somebody is stabbed, there’s CCTV footage of the offender but police aren’t able to identify them and they look like they might be under 18?
Too bad so sad but we can’t release the footage to the public?

I’ve noticed they have a permanent security/loss prevention officer standing out the front of the IGA in Florey. Must have been too busy listening to his ipod instead of dealing with this situation.

The security guard is paid by IGA to stand outside their store. Why is he going to get involved in an altercation at Dominos?

That, and the IGA closes at 9pm and this happened at 10:30.

There’s heaps of feral little gobshites running around the ‘burbs at the moment. I’m pretty close to disciplining the kid next door because his fat mum can’t catch him on her mobility scooter.

Yep. I feel sorry for Dominos staff regardless. Is Florey becoming the new Charney?
Lets hope these young persons are made to account for their actions soon.

They may not have seen it given it was at the rear of the dominos (though I’m not totally familiar with the layout)- what’s more though it’s worth remembering that security staff don’t actually have any special powers outside of those of anyone else (citizens arrest, ect). Few of them (bar the sort of meatheads employed at nightclubs) are itching to get into a physical confrontation in which they could be injured or worse- end up at the wrong end of a months or years long court case.
Most just aren’t being paid enough to even think about going outside the bounds of their work duties.

Interesting – my younger brother and I had a bit of a run in with a similarly sized group of similarly aged(but probably none over 14 or so) kids at the Hawker KFC a couple of months ago. They were sitting on the steps and as we left and started shouting out abuse and trying to provoke a response (‘what u lookin at?’) as we walked past. One *girl* steped out and started shouting, following us as we walked to my car, demanding to know ‘what we were doing’ and approaching as though she seriously wanted to start a physical confrontation. – just got in my car and drove off, but it was a bit of a wtf moment. I guess they’d been drinking or something.

I found it a bit hard to take seriously since me and him are early 20s, 80+ kilo and reasonably fit, but it was fairly weird experience and I can easily see someone on their own being highly intimidated, god forbid they were a pensioner.

I guess I should ask something like ‘why are 14 year olds out at 20:30pm? where are their parents? ect ect, but given other events in the general area (http://the-riotact.com/alleged-cat-throwing-teenager-to-face-the-childrens-court/61675) I think I already know the answer.

10 youths are described as being aged between 13 and 16 years. That is really quite scary to me, a gang that large committing that kind of crime. Were some of them good kids just participating in gang mentality? Or were they all felons. You would of thought at least a few of them would stand up to the others and say that what they were doing was wrong.

Frightening.

I will say it again- Florey is the new Charnie..

Seems likely that the staff likely know who the perps are,

Maybe it’s time school holidays were a privilege for those who have earned trust and everyone else can attend compulsory holiday programs situated in schools.

I vote chain gang for the trouble-makers, picking up rubbish around the ACT

I don’t agree with the chains but just a few days ago I was looking at the weeds infesting some of the median strips where the ornamental grasses make weedspraying difficult and thinking there’s some potential for people who want to repay their debt to society to do something useful. Where do the community service order people go anyway? It seems you only hear about it when one appears in court again after not turning up. Maybe some more conspicuous community service, and some genuine words of encouragement from passers-by, would help them more and would make us less cynical about the whole idea?
Getting back on topic, where did the parents of the 13 year old think he was at 10.30 at night?

There is a distinction between school and prison. Or there should be!

There should be a distinction between kids enjoying their holidays and kids comitting crime.

It didn’t take long for the Canberra Times to report another incident that makes me wonder where the h@ll society is headed. 🙁

I don’t know the layout of the Florey shops. Why would the Dominos staff choose to lead the kids through the rear of the store when they returned? I understand if the staff don’t like bringing thieves to the front counter (bad look), but leading a group of crims into backstreets and loading docks doesn’t sound like the safest idea to me.

Maybe, but let’s not lose sight of who is at fault. I feel so sad for the staff. Maybe it’s time school holidays were a privilege for those who have earned trust and everyone else can attend compulsory holiday programs situated in schools, might have less school buildings burning down that way too.

Kids like this that deserve an elbow to the temple.

If I went to the trouble of chasing down a thief, I like to think I would put in a little extra effort to provide them with an adequate deterrent against future stupidity.

I’m guessing school holidays started yesterday.

or just call the police in the 1st instance

Kids like this that deserve an elbow to the temple.

The front entrance leads directly into the kitchen area. The “rear entrance” was probably the drivers’ entrance, closer to the ‘office’…
