Former Prime Minister Julia Gillard will be signing copies of her book My Story on Tuesday December 23 between 2.00pm to 4.00pm at Paperchain.

‘I was prime minister for three years and three days. Three years and three days of resilience. Three years and three days of changing the nation. Three years and three days for you to judge.’

On Wednesday 23 June 2010, with the government in turmoil, Julia Gillard asked Prime Minister Kevin Rudd for a leadership ballot.

The next day, Julia Gillard became Australia’s 27th prime minister, and our first female leader. Australia was alive to the historic possibilities. Here was a new approach for a new time.

It was to last three extraordinary years.

This is Julia Gillard’s chronicle of that turbulent time, a strikingly candid self-portrait of a political leader seeking to realise her ideals. It is her story of what it was like – in the face of government in-fighting and often hostile media – to manage a hung parliament, build a diverse and robust economy, create an equitable and world-class education system, ensure a dignified future for Australians with disabilities, all while attending to our international obligations and building strategic alliances for our future. This is a politician driven by a sense of purpose – from campus days with the Australian Union of Students, to a career in the law, to her often gritty, occasionally glittering rise up the ranks of the Australian Labor Party.

Refreshingly honest, peppered with a wry humour and personal insights, Julia Gillard does not shy away from her mistakes, admitting freely to errors, misjudgements, and policy failures as well as detailing her political successes. Here is an account of what was hidden behind the resilience and dignified courage Gillard showed as prime minister, her view of the vicious hate campaigns directed against her, and a reflection on what it means – and what it takes – to be a woman leader in contemporary politics.

Here, in her own words, Julia Gillard reveals what life was really like as Australia’s first female prime minister.

When: Tuesday December 23
Time: 2.00pm until 4.00pm
Where: Paperchain Manuka, 34 Franklin Street
RSVP: Telephone 6295 6723 or email info@paperchainbookstore.com.au

I am assuming the books will be free of charge in the tradition of the socialism she preached in her short tenure as PM.

Is the tradition of socialism for books to be free? Source?

Peter Garrett – Minister for School Education, Minister for Early Childhood and Youth

Families across Australia will be encouraged to share books, songs and rhymes with their young children every day as part of the national Let’s Read Early Literacy campaign, launched this week. The program provides families and children with information and free books and other reading resources, a DVD with examples of how to read with children at various ages, and suggested reading lists. “The Gillard Government knows how important it is to give young kids the gift of reading at an early age, which is why we’ve provided $1 million in funding for the Let’s Read campaign,” Mr Garrett said.

OK?

Perfect, thanks.

Not sure I understand what the problem is in trying to get Australians literate from an early age. The ABS says in its ‘Programme for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies Australia, 2011-12’ published in October 2013 that around 44% of Australians aged 15-74 range from having no literary skills to being just able to read and understand a newspaper.

The introduction to the document says: “The modern economy is marked by an increasing demand for information-processing skills and other high level cognitive and interpersonal skills. The availability and appropriate use of these skills is essential for continuing growth in economic productivity…Individuals with poorer skills are at risk of not being able to participate fully in the labour market, education and training and social and civic life.”

So, if literacy skills help both society and the economic growth, who cares how raising them is done?

“Refreshingly honest” .bwahahaha

The woman couldn’t go a month with out being caught out lying.

Old ladies in shopping centres were calling her out on her lies. I’m surprised she is now visiting shopping centres.

Actually the Labor party – looking at the polls and seeing a record defeat looming – judged her first and reinstalled Kevin Rudd as PM who saved a whole generation of younger Labor MPs in marginal seats, not to mention avoiding a total wipeout of Labor in Qld, WA, SA, Tas and the western suburbs of Sydney. We should be forever grateful that as a result one term Tony will soon be gone and will not be as difficult to remove from office as four term Howard.

I think you will find Abbott is unflushable also.

In what way, he is doing a very good job of ruining the country right now. All the swinging voters who thought Labor was bad have changed their minds that is for sure. Basically Labor wasn’t running the country the ways the libs wanted to run it, however they’ve since found out because they neglected to tell us their real plans that most voters don’t like the Libs ideas either.

An over capitalistic society like the USA is just as bad as a full on socialist country. Australians want something in the middle. They like universal education and healthcare for a start.

Its going to take a lot of fear mongering and lying for Tony to stay in power past the next election. You can’t blame everyone else for a whole term of government.

I thought I needed a new keyboard – you need a new logic board.
What are you trying to actually say?
