Our latest US Ambassador to Canberra John Berry has taken the unusual step of introducing himself to us via YouTube.

A brief welcome video from Ambassador John Berry.

Sending a gay couple out to say howdy to Tony Abbott shows Obama still has a sense of humour. But it looks like they can all go swimming and cycling together.

Welcome, Mr Berry.

Sadly your spousal relationship won’t be recognised in this sad little country.

In what sense won’t it be “recognised”? If it’s a legal marriage overseas between two American citizens, then of course it is “recognised” here at an official level. Anywayz, they’ve only been married for one month out of a 17-year relationship, so clearly they were happy to just be “partners” for 16 years and 11 months.

Not so much happy as “it wasn’t legally recognised by the supreme court of the US until June this year”. So basically, two months after it was legally recognised, they did it.

Or maybe the marriage laws in their state just for amended…

I thought it was a nice introduction, seems like a good bloke.

The Yanks haven’t done too badly in Ambassador selection over the last few years IMO.

He also mentioned Science…(-:

Jeffrey Bleich was an engaging speaker. Hard act to follow.

He’s a former zookeeper. Fantastic!

Mr Abbott said he would “probably feel a bit threatened … as most people do” when asked how he felt about homosexuality.

Lucky the ambassador presumably flew in. Come by boat and Tony would be running for the bunker.

Berry by name, fruity by nature. Seriously, though John and his partner seem like cool dudes. Welcome to our neck of the woods.

‘A new word is like a present…’

(From a book of crappy inspirational writing quotes that doesn’t actually exist.)

I thought our Satrap was Chris Mitchell.

Looks like Tony has had a great start to his PM role. In the first week after the election we had bushfires ravaging N.S.W, then in the second weekend we got floods and heavy rain. Apart from getting off on the wrong foot with Indonesia regarding his boat policies he now has a gay spokesperson for our biggest ally to contend with. I wonder if he thought this would be an easy job. Just wait till he tries to repeal the carbon tax.
