We have a Federal Election looming and one issue that seems to come up from time to time with any Prime Ministerial hopeful is where he (we are yet to have a she) shall reside. Well Melbourne-based “author and business adviser” Bernard Salt has written this piece for the Herald Sun making some good Constitutional points why the Prime Minister should live in Canberra.

If Howard wins again I can’t see him suddenly moving to the Lodge full time after a decade at Kirribilli. Has Rudd made it clear what he intends to do?

I’m not that worried about the amount needed to maintain the lodge, not when you look at the staggering wastage of $$ that occurs in many large gov departments (yes, you should blush Defence).

Rudd will stay in the lodge, according to this

only issue I have is tax dollars paying for upkeep of unused lodge… at least with memorial it is something to look.. whereas with lodge we just look at hedges. excuse bad my england ..cant be arsed.

I thought Rudd had already made a point of saying that he would live at the Lodge. (Which may or may not be why Stanhope was talking about rebuilding it a few weeks back)

Who gives a crap – it’s a storm in a teacup.

If Rudd becomes PM and stays in Brisbane, will we then hear talk about “Brisbane refuses …” “Brisbane has decided …” “Brisbane’s position is …”?

I am pretty sure Rudd was going to stay in Brisbane. That was what was speculated a few months back.

Who cares, anyway?

Yeah, it does seem slightly shrill – though I do agree with the sentiment.

I think the author overeggs things a bit by describing the PM living in Sydney as “the Constitution architects’ worst nightmare.
